This interpretation vs the books?

Has anyone read Chesterons shorts? I'm sort of wondering how Walliams portrayal is. I really like the show, but being a huge AC's Poirot fan, I can't help thinking that Father Brown is a rather poorly drawn character. I couldn't really care less about him.
I'm not saying every TV detective needs ti be an ex-heroin addict with multiple personalities, but they should have some deep background story or at least be somewhat distinguishable.
The open-minded priest is somewhat one-dimensional. I know Chesterton was forward-thinking - but besides it being unlikely a clergy man in the 50s were so open to other cultures - he isn't very memorable at all.

have you seen Father Brown 1954 with Alec Guinness in the lead? this is what I feel the new version is based on rather than the books.

reply

No, but I'll try and track it down if I can.

Chesterton could be a very witty writer. Unfortunately these Father Brown programmes seems to have mistaken bufoonery and implausibility for wit. Characters such as Mallory would never appear in Chesterton's books, and I have to wonder if the screenwriters, directors and producers too, have even read any of the works of Chesterton, including the Father Brown novels which in fact are only a a minor portion of said works.

The books are completely different. You should try reading them. The first one, the Innocence of Father brown, is the one i personally like the best.
