Casey

I don't get his character. He's all super Christian minister. But then he's all about sex out of wedlock... I get that many Christians don't follow EVERY rule, but based on his role in the Christian community I think that'd be something he would be held up to... Right?

reply

I think he's supposed to be from a less conservative sect, like Unitarian. He mentioned gay dads at his church, and he wanted Mindy to talk about Hinduism. So he's obviously not supposed to be Fundamentalist.

Well, yes, he didn't come off as conservative at all. But just being a minister who prays before every meal and such I think that sex out of wedlock would be a big deal. The Bible can be interpreted in many ways so there are many Christians who are certainly okay with homosexuality and other religions but I think the no sex before marriage rule is pretty clear. Now I know not everyone adheres to every rule, but I just expected a minister would follow that specific one.

reply

Idk. Obviously, he wasn't a great or very committed minister, since he quit. But I also think some religions take the Bible more literally than others. I mean, obviously there's some kind of continuum starting with people who don't believe in cutting their hair or women wearing pants and moving more and more liberal. It doesn't seem to me that having premarital sex in a committed relationship would be the absolutely last rule to fall, but I don't really know. I think, in general, a lot of people have a lot more sex than they admit.

When Casey was degraded--yes, degraded--I had two conflicting feelings about this. (Now the same thing seems--seems--to be happening to Danny.) First, I was mad as hell that Mindy Kaling would insult Christianity that way. Second, I thought that perhaps she was offering a picture of a basically schizophrenic rich boy whose schizophrenia or bi-polar disorder is concealed by lots and lots of money. As this frequently happens in real-life--money concealing psychosis (vide: Presidential candidates)--and because I love The Mindy Project, I give Kaling the benefit of the doubt. She's a genius, she's female, and, God knows, civilization hasn't exactly gone light on the objectification of women fictional characters throughout history.

But you're right. Casey is an affront to Christianity. (Danny is an affront to Catholicism in Catholicism purest form.)

reply

I don't think sex out of wedlock is the worst of the Christian offenses or Casey's offenses overall. There's much more that he did that one could complain about.

But I'm also conflicted, like some here, about Kaling's representation of Christianity. On the one hand, both of Mindy Lahiri's serious relationships were with religious men. And Casey was only really douchey when he stepped away from his religion, so that's a positive. On the other hand, Casey's quick leap from Minister to DJ, as well as how Danny uses his religion (among other things) against Mindy or to get his way, is on the negative side.

So I guess it's a balanced representation? And that's absolutely fair.
