One thing I never understood...

Why are the midwives always depicted as the ladies' men types? One of them is okay and the other one is uhhh. On the other hand Jeremy and Danny are hot as hell. It just comes across as forced and non-organic. Who in their right mind would 1) choose them over actual doctors when it comes to having a baby and 2) think they're at all cute compared to the other two? For real.

Middle- and lower-upper-class wannabe Gwyneth Paltrow types.

Well they also originally wrote Jeremy as the suave lady's man (remember that he and Mindy were sleeping together at the beginning), and then somewhere alone the way he turned into a very attractive but desperate and doofy kind of guy. I love the show, but they're not exactly good at consistent characterization.

You need to rewatch the very first episode.

Danny had Jenna Dewan-Tatum drooling over him on the show. He's doing fine.

Not to mention the much younger than him Allison Williams in season 1. I think she's 28 NOW.

Are you asking why people choose midwives over doctors? Have you ever had a kid? There are a lot of reasons to choose a midwife and a comedy isn't a very accurate depiction of the medical field.

reply

Um, I know a thing or two about medicine since I've studied biology and was pre-med for a while before deciding to go into neuroscience. There was one thing they got right though - if you're a young woman having your first baby then chances are you're gonna do fine no matter if you have a midwife or a doctor. But, complications do arise and if you are older, overweight, or have a medical condition then the chances of those complications occurring go up significantly and a midwife will not be able to handle the situation.

They actually said this on the show, the episode where Danny and Jeremy ganged up on Mindy and ended up losing half their patients to the midwives.

As a woman, I think women go to midwives because they want a more touchy-feely birth experience. The same type of people who film the birth and want to watch it again or have their whole family in the room, or other things that a conventional hospital might not want. Or maybe people who are really afraid of unnecessary C-sections. If they're like me and think that it's what happens AFTER the baby is born that's important (because my mother totally slept through my birth and I am okay, and I still like her), they go to a doctor.

I don't think Duncan is considered a lady's man, just Brendan. Duncan's weird, but I think Brendan is just hideous, so I'm with you. I think some women really fall for that soothing New Age *beep* and predatory guys just use it to get into stupid women's pants.

1.) Hipsters

2.) Hipsters

The current trend is for women to want to be of the earth. Every woman I know who has got pregnant in the last 5 years became a hippie overnight. They put themselves on a pedestal if they have a drug-free/vaginal/home birth (3/3=A+) and insist on exclusive breastfeeding as long as possible and cloth/hemp diapers. They ignore medical data and stats and often what is safest. They turn their noses up at convenience or medical intervention. It's a competition within their mom groups to be the most natural/unselfish/organic mom and this martydrom gets them attention and self-satisfaction. Dudes who appeal to their new lifestyle are hot...chicks who couldn't stand facial hair suddenly love untamed beards. It's not a coincidence so many men suddenly have beards now, it's what women are looking for, so they're playing the part. Professional, groomed men are out...for now.

I always thought it was just for fun. The Deslauriers are obviously less handsome than our guys. But they're the competition and I guess the new age zen holistic stuff might be attractive to a lot of women. That's why they seem more hip than traditional doctors.
