Sorry, but this movie not doing well at the box office might have something to do with the fact that it's not very good maybe?
I checked this movie out as an IMDB follow up to a movie I really enjoyed, "The Spectacular Now", but that movie and this are miles apart I'm afraid.
It's not a bad movie, just not very good IMO.
The story/script has an unhealthy dose of saccharine, and the acting by some of the main characters (Kinnear excepted) isn't too hot either.
Then there's the plot holes:
Would a whole family jump in a car and go in a frantic search for a girl who leaves a 'boring book launch' with some guy? (and how did the mother find out where the guy lives just by getting his first name anyway?)
Do you think Stephen King sits around waiting for stories from unknowns?
If they were very lucky, someone sending a manuscript MIGHT get as far as Stephen king's secretaries, secretary's cleaning lady, but that's about it.
It falls between too many stools for it to have done any better at the box office (I know that box office has little bearing on whether a movie is actually any good or not).
It's dialogue driven, but the dialogue isn't funny, clever, thought provoking or incisive enough to carry this film. You want a movie that is?
Think "Sideways" or "Nebraska" or "The Spectacular Now" or "Silver Linings Playbook"
"Stuck In Love" isn't a bad movie, just not a very good one.
A bit like a meringue, slightly too sweet and not a lot of substance.
I'd give it a six.
