I loved this movie and can't believe how bad it did at the box office...

It was well-written, the actors were excellent, it addressed various age groups... What happened at the box office? This movie had way more depth than "No Strings Attached" (which did well at the box office). Was it toooo deep for the average 13-year-old mentality?

reply

It had nothing to do with quality or even what audiences wanted to see they simply couldn't see it, this movie was released in so few theaters and had such little advertising and promotion it really had no chance. I know a bunch of people in my area who wanted to see it and we all had to wait for the DVD as it wasn't playing anywhere in our state or even ones nearby, given the response to the film once it came out on iTunes and DVD I think this film could have been a hit in theaters if the distributor had given it a chance and given it a wide release and promotion (it had big stars yet none of them appeared on any national talk shows pushing the film for example)

It had a B-movie feel to it, despite the cast. I couldn't finish it, the progression was just too linear. There was some bad editing as well, that was surprising.

reply

Really? Huh. I didn't catch the bad editing. I recently watched the movie Thor and felt the first 20 minutes had some bad editing (confusing visuals), although I liked the film and it did very well at the box office. Seems weird to think that super-hero movies can out-do character dramas...but maybe not so weird when you realize that movies are aimed at 13-year-olds.

reply

I don't mean confusing visuals.
I mean in one part of dialogue, the video and audio clearly differ for a few seconds. They probably substituted dialogue in editing and were too lazy to re-shoot the scene.

In what sense? If you're referring to box office performance, then it wouldn't call that weird - actually very predictable. Super-hero movies make money.

U white, bro?

It only shows that your taste is very different from mainstream viewers, LOL. If you are an introvert, you might start looking into yourself and find out why.

reply

I'm guessing it had a lot to do with promotion and limited theaters. I had never even heard of this film. Watchd it on Netflix. It was excellent.

It was also rated R i believe when I think is a bit much. There was no nudity and hardly any swearing.

Perhaps our greatest cruelty is our blindness to the despair of others.

I agree with pretty much everything that's already been said. Add to the fact that it's basically an indie - first time writer/director, fresh-faced teenagers, etc - and that means it gets less exposure than it deserves. I haven't seen No Strings Attached, but I can guarantee this movie is better than it. NSA looks like utter rubbish, and this movie is great.

You heart me? What is that? Is that like I love you for pussies?

reply

Sorry, but this movie not doing well at the box office might have something to do with the fact that it's not very good maybe?
I checked this movie out as an IMDB follow up to a movie I really enjoyed, "The Spectacular Now", but that movie and this are miles apart I'm afraid.
It's not a bad movie, just not very good IMO.
The story/script has an unhealthy dose of saccharine, and the acting by some of the main characters (Kinnear excepted) isn't too hot either.
Then there's the plot holes:
Would a whole family jump in a car and go in a frantic search for a girl who leaves a 'boring book launch' with some guy? (and how did the mother find out where the guy lives just by getting his first name anyway?)
Do you think Stephen King sits around waiting for stories from unknowns?
If they were very lucky, someone sending a manuscript MIGHT get as far as Stephen king's secretaries, secretary's cleaning lady, but that's about it.
It falls between too many stools for it to have done any better at the box office (I know that box office has little bearing on whether a movie is actually any good or not).
It's dialogue driven, but the dialogue isn't funny, clever, thought provoking or incisive enough to carry this film. You want a movie that is?
Think "Sideways" or "Nebraska" or "The Spectacular Now" or "Silver Linings Playbook"
"Stuck In Love" isn't a bad movie, just not a very good one.
A bit like a meringue, slightly too sweet and not a lot of substance.
I'd give it a six.

It's an ok movie but too predictable with an unrealistic happy ending for everyone. How convenient!
This was a Disney movie coated with big people issues. I just couldn't buy it.

I agree with the last two posts, it just wasn't that good. Cast was great , but the script was shallow and lacked direction. They needed to fluff it up ,add comedy and gear it to 13 year olds. No reason to go for an R rrating and even pretend there was depth to the move.
