Not bad. Thoughts about the ending. (Mild spoilers)
Deals with some very basic themes of trauma, alienation, and the healing power of human connection. But does so in a fairly authentic and credible way.
I'm thinking that maybe we're expected to expect Rene to attack the uncle physically at the end. And maybe he wanted to briefly. But I suspect all he did was warn him that if he went near MacKenzie again, he (Rene) would tell the cops what happened. That's probably enough to protect MacKenzie.
All in all, it was moving to see Rene come out of his cold shell, connect with MacKenzie over their shared losses, and begin to heal, finding purpose and connection in acting as her friend and surrogate father. It was also good to see Mackenzie begin to heal from the loss of her own father, and realize she could find paternal love and friendship without having to exploit herself sexually.
Again, very basic themes, and a very basic film, but addressing some basic truths.
