I need to rewatch the original movie

Now that the show is almost catching up to the movie, this episode just started to overlap with Marion stealing the money. I know there are so many almost-duplicated shots so I need to rewatch the Hitchcock movie. I just moved it to the top of my Netflix queue.
Like that scene of Marion looking over Sam's shoulder and her whole face is in shadow except a bar of light just across her eyes. That is very Hitchcockian.

It took 4 years to come up to this?

4 years has passed in real time, but less time I think in the show timeline. The timeline is a bit messed up but I think it's only been like 3 years in show time.

Is it as good as the 1998 movie?

reply

I don't think I have seen the remake, or I can't remember it that well if I did see it. the show is good, it's got a lot of non-canon characters but it I think has more call backs to the Hitchcock movie than to the sequels or remake.

Some people complain that the lead character is depicted differently in this show than in the original Hitchcockian movie

I just rewatched the original and am in the middle of rewatching Psycho II. I also watched the 1998 remake for the first time.

The 1998 remake. was super weird. I did not realize before I watched it that it was a line for line, scene for scene, identical remake. But they added all these bizarre details like Marion dressing like a clown, Sam having the world's worst southern accent even though he's from California, and Lila being a butch lesbian with a big jangly key ring. And Vince Vaughn was just miscast as Norman, he was super creepy right from the first impression, and the whole thing of Norman's character is he's supposed to be boyish and polite and almost charming at first and not turn creepy until later.

So this was interesting watching the original this past weekend and then watching bates Motel do those scenes tonight.

They did use a lot of the original conversation between Marion and Norman in the office back room, like about the private traps people make for themselves, and the stuff about taxidermy. But then they switched Marion with Sam, and recreated the famous shower murder scene with Sam getting killed and Marion escaping. That was an interesting twist! the shower scene was still almost shot for shot the same, down to the grabbing the shower curtain and pulling it off the rings.
One could argue that Sam could easily overpower Norman and just wrestle the knife away from him. Sam's arms are much longer so he could have just held Norman at arm's length, Killing a man larger than you is a bit harder than killing a petite woman. But let's just assume Norman had extra strength when he's in his fugue state.

Well he was surprised and didn't really have time to fully react until after being stabbed the first time. I've never been stabbed myself but I would think it weakens you quite fast.
