This show had me until half way through season 4!

SPOILERS AHEAD!! DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVE NOT FINISHED THE 4TH SEASON!!!

About the half way point in the fourth season the "Gimme a break, as if that could even possibly happen" alarm started sounding in my head.

Starting with the Dr. diagnosing Norman with multiple personality disorder, and then releasing him on his own recognizance. As if there is a Dr. alive that would risk losing his license, or being sued, but fine whatever.

Then there's the whole thing with Norma's death... aren't the police supposed to notify the next of kin when someone dies? So why didn't anyone tell Dillon? Certainly sheriff Romero would have had to answer some very basic and simple questions like did she have children?

There are also lots of little things like Norma pulling up at night in front of the steps up to their house, getting out of the car but leaving the car lights on and the door open, saying a few things with Norman then walking up the stairs arm in arm to the house and forgetting all about the car, like who in the world would do that? The car lights are illuminating the stairs and casting a shadow right in front of you! You couldn't miss it if you were in that situation, you simply couldn't, but wait, the light might turn off automatically? And, I guess the door closes automatically too? I'm pretty sure neither option was available on the 1972 Mercedes-Benz 280 SEL 4.5

There's also the time when the heat was out so Norma goes and buys some heaters then later comes to Norman's room where he has his lights on and heater blaring and says "oh why didn't I think of this sooner, but we can go down and sleep in the hotel rooms". So they leave together closing Norman's bedroom door leaving the lights and the red hot heater on that's on a bookshelf right next to the wall. Again it's just something anyone over 7 would just not do.
I guess you could use the argument that they are both insane and that's why they do these absurd things, but I think it's just errors that truly great shows like Game of Thrones, or The Soprano's , or Deadwood, or The Wire just would not make.

You know the acting in this show is really top notch, but the writing sometimes ruins it. I do understand that there is only so much wiggle room there to play with to stay true to the "Psycho" story line, but the story has to be believable to keep you interested.

I gotta say I'm disappointed because 95% of the show is so good, and it just seems lazy to make stupid errors like some of the one's mentioned above.

Just to finish off here, the actors themselves aren't lazy, especially Vera Farmiga(one of the best actor's today) who gives her all, every episode, I mean my god she must be emotionally drained daily during shooting. Really the main cast does such a good job acting in this show I just wish there was a better attention to detail.

Have you watched many movies and tv show? They all have goofs in them, even the great ones. Watch closely and you'll see lights left on that should have been turned off and doors left open even after an actor has closed it. They're often continuity errors.

I agree that the acting on "Bates Motel" has been great, particularly by Vera Farmiga who deserves all the praise she has received. My main complaint about the show is that the sub-plots are often downright boring. I especially hated the whole marijuana storyline. Anything that didn't directly concern Norma and Norman was as dull as watching paint dry.

You're right, it is illogical. But, we get 42 minutes or so per episode. Seconds add up, and I guess they just assume that we don't want to spend half an hour of the series watching them turn things off.
