Why does Netflix say it's TV-14?

Why does Netflix say it's TV-14 when it clearly isn't? Very deceptive...

I think Seasons 1-3 were TV-14 (with the exception of 2-3 single episodes), but I noticed that once they reached Season 4, they changed the series ratings to TV-MA. Perhaps when Netflix adds S4, the ratings will change.

I agree with you though, that this show is not really appropriate for teens under 17 or 18.

On Netflix Ireland it has a '18' certificate but I noticed on Amazon UK that the individual seasons have a '15' certificate. However, the Seasons 1-2 and 1-3 boxsets both have a '18' certificate.

I agree with the both of you that it's not really suitable for younger teens.

That's weird, I could swear it was TV-MA since season 1, every season. I don't generally care as I've been an adult a long, long time, but sometimes there's extended family residing who join in & I pay attention to those things then.

Rating it TV-MA is a surefire way of getting the 14-16 year olds to want to watch it.

Here in Australia Bates Motel has always been rated MA, though here MA is 15+ which means:

Not suitable for people under 15. Content is strong in impact; It is advised people under the age of 15 do not view these programs, due to the strength of the elements within. MA15+ programming may only be broadcast between 8:30 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. on any given day.

Then the M rating is also 15 + though meaning:

Recommended for viewing only by persons aged 15 years or over. Content is moderate in impact; These programs may require a mature perspective and are deemed not suitable for all children. M content may only be broadcast between 7:30 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. on any day, and additionally between 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. on schooldays.

They give a visual and vocal warning at the start though as to what it contains like for Bates Motel:

This program contains Adult Themes, Stylised Violence, Sexual References and Horror Elements.

Plus it will have abbreviations displayed along with the classification symbol (MA) after each commercial break, based on these:

A – used for programs with adult themes.
V – used for programs depicting violence;
L – used for programs coarse language;
S – used for programs depicting simulated sex scenes and/or references;
H – used for programs containing horror or supernatural themes;
D – used for programs with drug references and/or use;
N – used for programs containing nudity;
MP – used for programs containing medical procedures;

So Bates Motel would be like this on the screen:

MA15+
A, V, S, H

Edit: That's only for Free-To-Air TV (our ones similar to NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox), Cable can show whatever classified programs at whatever time they like including ones with the f-word and c-word (where those words are restricted to after 8:30pm on Free-To-Air TV however can be in M rated shows).

I would NEVER permit a 14yo to watch this show! Just the first episode of the first season ,alone, is enough to warrant that!

An intellectual carrot , the mind boggles
