Why did he not fight in the war? Because of his job being needed back home, or because of the burn injury?

Because he wasn't in the military and there was no conscription.

What war are we talking about? This is set in the 1890s, not after WW1.

I assume Bennet had been fighting in the Anglo-Egyptian war and probably the second Anglo-Afghan war.

Makes me wonder - has there ever not been a war in Afghanistan?

After all is said and done, a lot more will have been said than done.

Afghanistan and the Middle East. Trade routes are worth fighting over.
