I'm confused about that hanging in s04e01

SPOILERS ON SEASON 4 EP 1.

I just watched s04e01 and I'm quite confused about Long Susan's hanging and how Jackson saved her life. We can see some kind of long spring when Jackson's working on the thing he used to save her, also when he takes it out of her after the "hanging" it looks like a system with straps in her back and around her legs (?) but I definitely don't understand how it works.

Anyone knows? Or is it explained later on the show? (please avoid major spoilers though!)

It's just a mechanical system so that the force of her dropping is absorbed by the spring and straps rather than her neck.

Jackson threatened the prison doctor to use the device. It's a full body harness with a spring built into it to absorb the shock of her weight when falling as the other poster has stated. For this to fully work the doctor had to pay off all those who were involved in the hanging. The hangman would have had to of somehow hooked the harness into the main rope at the knot so as to completely bypass the loop around her neck. So when she fell the loop stayed loose and the harness and spring took the shock of her weight. She just needed to play along and kick around a little.
