Maybe I'm getting old and want things to be simplistic, but I wanted Daniel and Tawney to ride off into the sunset together.

I think it's fine to want them to be together. Why not? It's just that wisdom doesn't always align with wishes. That's another hard thing about getting old.
You can take away the couple, but at least you get the sunset. Otherwise it would be a jive rip-off. Or an existential art film. Come to think of it, those are jive rip-offs too.
