Noah Solloway - Daniel Holden

Contrast and compare.

The Affair's Noah.

Rectify's Daniel.

Noah/solitary/life after prison

Daniel Holden (Rectify)/solitary/life after prison.

Daniel emerges as a mensch; Noah, not so much. (Daniels creator suggests but does not claim outright that Daniel was not guilty of murder.) Why can't Noah be like Daniel?

reply

And both were tortured in solitary.

reply

first what is a mensch:p?

second goddamn i need to catch up, last episode i saw he got stabbed in the neck
i think that was 3,

how is season 3, i have been keeping it on ice till there are more new episodes,
so i can just binge it all at once,

i have been rewatching the wire though, so i am getting my Dominic West fill,

i think differences between Solloway is and Daniel was that daniel wasn't fully formed when he was put in jail, spent alot longer time, and believed he might be guilty

noah on the other hand is in his 40s, has 4 kids, knows he is innocent but plead guilty for a totally different reason, and he has fat brendan fraiser around him,

but then again i am about 5 episodes behind,

reply

A mensch is a Decent Person, a real Man (or Woman). Capitals intended.

ITA with your interpretation.

Noah and Helen are supposed to be Gen X, but did that mean they had their first child when they were college seniors? Maura Tierney does look about 10 year younger than her real age, but IMHO Dominic West, he of the frog face, looks mid baby boom.

reply

part of the problem is that Noah never got a wake up call to make him a Mensch
they had that multi-million dollar brown stone, anything paid for that they needed by daddy-in-law(love the pairing of John Doman and West once again), in in his life of privilege he felt undermined, underachieved, and unfulfilled with his regular life which is what made him step out on Helen,

although because of both perspectives in the first season, i am still confused as to who was the instigator of the titular "affair", Alison or Noah they both were guilty,

really he was showing as close to being a Mensch with him finally stepping up and taking the rap for the death of Scottie(why do they always name douche bags Scott, am i destined for douche-baggery for the rest of my life) although from what Ive gathered from what Ive seen he did it for the kids, and for Alison, not for Helen, taking away from the true man aspect, still falling back on the crutch that he used to write Descent with, and not keeping true to Helen, but at least keeping her safe so the children can have their mother,

but don't be to hard on Mr West, when you are baltimore murder police for several years, all that jamesons, and waitress poon takes its toll! his father was also a mexican drug lord, a pawn shop broker, and an italian prison gang leader, life is tough, especially when you are irish, DING DING DING, everytime he here's that bell he thinks of all the times his father died, whether it is exploding up a chilean meth kingpin, getting killed by the future joker, or getting aids from a nigerian drug dealer turned priest, life musta been hard

that is great to hear, good news all over
visited my grandpa today and he is finally doing better, turned out he had a mass on his kidney the size of a football that had been there for years, without sign of with out signs it has metastasized so that is a load off my chest,
btw you show hasn't started up again yet eh? ill shoot you a message when it the mid season premeir happens, depsite how terrible i might think it is;)

reply

Season 1 of Jane was brilliant. Unfortunately it hasn't maintained the quality since. I barely made it through S2, and have taken a break from it for now.

ATM, I like the idea of it more than the show itself. It is so feminist, female-centric and so good with Latino representation (and all sorts of other progressive things) that it's important to support regardless of quality. I also really love the actors, and it made me get back into Spanish and discover a whole world of Spanish-language (mostly Mexican) media and actors.

What is it that makes it terrible for you? It is hugely critically acclaimed. It got a Peabody just like Rectify.

reply

terrible is an overstatement, i overstate in playful teasing,
in reality it just isn't the show for me,
ive explained why in a private message as not to air all my dirty laundry out in the open,

i adore the speed at which the Spanish language can be spoken , and often is spoken just casually, and the elegance to it even with the speed, they call french the language of love, but Spanish is the language of passion

and the intricacies of its profanity is so interesting, so much variation, and other variables, and the emphasis of how certain phrases can be completely benign in one situation, but completely offensive in another,
and the social implications in the spanish/latin culture that influence the severity of the profanities, compared to other languages,
there is no true equivalency to the F word in spanish, not a specific one like english that is used universally,

but now you have made me crave ceviche,
maybe even some cuy
