Season 2 - maybe it's new writers as the show has declined

1) Reggie and Amber have developed a strange relationship. When they introduced the Jane character, I was hoping this would end the Reggie and Amber's relation, but instead it's gotten even more absurd as whole point is that they are only supposed to like each other from a distance.

2) The show seems to have dropped all the other extraterrestrials neighbors, and without these extras, it makes the main extraterrestrials look even more human as it would have been better to develop some of these other characters to enhance the show over time.

3) What happen to Max and Abby as they seem to be missing most of the time.

4) In the first season, the extraterrestrials have unlimited money but now they need jobs - what's with this change?

reply

I didn't want to complain, because this show has enough troubles.

IMO the writing was better last season.

Much better with an entire alien community going on, with all its quirks and complications.

Trying to give this new storyline a chance, but Amber and Reggie's gradually growing relationship was far more interesting before.

Regardless, I think about as many people have discovered this show as are ever likely to. Not happy about it, but I suspect that's true.

Above average while it lasted, often quite good, and with some really great eps.

My favorites in Season 1 "Human School","Christmas" "Thanksgiving", "Halloween" and "Going to the Mall" as all these shows were able to show the real differences between the neighbors. Also in the beginning, they occasional clapped their hands over their head to turn into green lizards, but that dropped that too. Also, I liked the way the show opened in the season 1 where it explained how the humans moved to their new neighborhood. I guess the problem with a show like this is that the neighbors from out-of-space at some point must become more human the longer they are on earth.

I loved the both the Friends (name of the episode, and the braids) and Terms of endearment (the hospital scene) references... but I guess some people didn't get it...

As for the braids if you liked it I'm happy for you. But so far this year, those watching it have dropped over 30% and I've read 40% as well. So if you like gabbie that's cool. But seeing millions of people have stopped watching the show, and not entirely because of the switch to Friday's.

Umm... I hate to burst your little bubble, buddy... but yes it is.
Look at Friday's latest ratings OVERALL:

Notice any trend?
The highest rated show on Friday is Friday at 8pm is a 1.4, while on Friday, the FOURTH place rating is a 1.5!! The CW doesn't even count as it's barely even a network.

Fridays... people are out. They're not watching TV. It's no longer "T.G.I.F." like in the 80's. It's "P.A.R.T.Y", movie night, video games, family night, go out on the town. You name it. It's the 2nd least-watched television night of the week behind Saturdays.

Your post is completely moot. Of COURSE people have not moved along with the switch to Fridays of the Neighbors. It's ONE-SINGLE-SHOW. Some have set their DVR's, others catch it when they can, others catch it on Hulu, and the rest said "oh, it's still on?".

I already did prove you wrong.

There is no "try".

Previous weeks indicate higher for each show.
This was just one successive week.

I could do it for the prior week, and so on & so on, but I don't need to.
The point is that Friday's are the 2nd least watched night of television. That's why there is such a huge decline, plain & simple.

There is no arguing about it... that's the EXACT answer to it. Many shows have failed by moving to Friday's, or by debuting on Friday's... it's been known as the "death slot".

Get your head out of your behind, if you think you know you're right, and just admit you're wrong for once.

Whatever. You're honestly not worth my time & small effort anymore.

To me the date doesn't make a difference because I watch it on Hulu, so I normally wouldn't watch it on the day of.

I hope they start taking online views into consideration as well before cancelling shows...

I think it's fine.

Not sure about answers to questions 1-3.

As for #4, when Larry announced to his father that they were staying on Earth, they were cut off financially.

reply

Clearly no one's bothered to research before posting. All of the episodes that have aired thus far were written by the same writing staff from season one. Personally I think the show's just as good as it was ("September Fools" is perhaps my favorite episode of the entire series) and most of the complaints in this thread (the lame James Bond gag, etc) seem to just be nitpicking. But to address the OP...

1) Amber has mellowed as the series progressed, and personally I buy their relationship -- which began as a friendship that still endures. Whether we're talking Mork and Mindy or Dick Solomon and Mary Albright, there's always an awkward "where the hell do we go with this?" period of adjustment when they hook up a human and alien. My only complaint is that they introduced Jane only to have her vanish without explanation. Is she still in the community, did she return to Zabvron or is she elsewhere on Earth?

2) The show barely got renewed (they announced a season 2 pickup, immediately recanted and then re-announced) and have joked about the night change, so I think it's safe to assume they've slashed the show's budget, which is why the other aliens haven't been seen. Last night's episode had scenes in an ER and there were hardly any extras. Season one had tons of extras and minor characters that had to be paid.

3) Max and Abby were missing from 2 of the 5 episodes (they're both in next week's new Halloween show)... but they were also absent from "Things Just Got Real," "Mother Clubbers," and a few other first season episodes. There are eight main characters, which is a lot to try to jam into a 20 minute episode, so the two youngest are always the first to be excluded.

4) As mentioned above and in "Family Conference" and "The Neighbours," Larry's funds were cut off after he refused to return to Zabvron.

You know that information about the writers is right here on this site right?

Your attitude seems more person in the basement than Vinnie's.

Just saying.

I do like that first idea, however.

Very good point.

I asked before about the money thing and still don't get it. The aliens were stranded on earth for 10 years, and never heard from the father and didn't know if/when they would, but they had unlimited money, so my interpretation is that daddy wasn't sending them money. And if he wasn't providing it, how could he stop providing it? It would make more sense if they just said it had run out. OTOH, I don't think that is their biggest problem right now; there were lapses in continuity in season one, and they didn't bother me. And I'll admit that the need for earning money should provide more opportunity for laughs.

I think the bigger problems this season are the writing doesn't seem as good, the characters are written differently, it feels more low budget (like all the missing aliens) and it's like it wants to be a slapstick sitcom with a little bit of raunch throw in to attract an audience who passed over it before ("oh look, we're being edgy") like some of the other dime a dozen sitcoms.

I love this show, and I'll continue watching (and whether I do or not won't affect the ratings because I'm not in their desired demographics). I just wish it would get back on the track on it was on towards the end of last season.

Veggie we all here appreciate your love for this show just like we do, however please don't turn this message board into another IMDB board that just has people taking pot shots at other posters. Vinnie has been posting here for a while and I for one appreciate his insight and analysis.

Now back to the subject at hand...

I myself have noticed that the show doesn't really have the same magic as it did last season and I really hope it turns around.

There was a sweetness to it last year, and a level of humor, that are completely missing now. I have watched the first few episodes of season 2 after really growing to enjoy the show last season, but I won't be continuing. It has become very difficult to watch, and for all the reasons that viewers have listed here, including the fact that Larry Bird has come back as an entirely different character. Oh well....

There was even more of disappointment in episodes 5 to 9 I just watched. What happened? It was a great show in season 1 with some refreshing ideas. Now it just lacks humor. Half of dialogs doesn't even make sense for outsiders of US (I know, I know... it supposed to be for US mainly). I felt awkward watching that. Too bad. I quit this show after 9th episode. Can't watch it anymore.

My concern is they are making Lenny Venito to be more competent and sane than he was season 1. Almost being the voice of reason. Lenny has always played the part of a goof ball, look at NYPD Blue when he was a "skell" and the other short lived sitcom(I think it was Knights of Prosperity) he was on, he was a little more nutty and more of a goof.

If i lived in a neighborhood of aliens, had a teenage daughter dating one, etc I would have gone looney and that is the direction i think they need to go.

I am NOT a sitcom person at all, I started watching this show as I was a big NYPD Blue fan and Lenny's bit part was so impressive I started following his career. But, this show does make my wife and I laufgh every episode. Not fall on the floor laughing but a chuckle or giggle.

I hope it stays on, its fun to watch.
