Giving it time ......
I don't think it's fair to compare BE ( with a few seasons under it's belt ) to a show that's had 60 total minutes. I don't think the casting is bad, but there are some problems in general.
1 - Much like Low Winter Sun, how the heck can I like the main character after he shot someone in the back, in cold blood. I'm supposed to feel like Teague is a good guy, but makes questionable decisions? It's a little too far beyond that. In LA Confidential, when Bud shoots the black duded who's tied up the woman, we all know he was doing a just deed. Teague killed some who ( as a viewer ) we're supposed to somewhat like.
2 - Ms Fontaine needs to stop squinting and looking like a sultry kitten. Interrogation room, she's all coy and quick witted. Everyone buys it ( except that one cop who gives Teague a dirty look, he knows something is foul here ). Open your damn eyes.
3 - Non plot specific, but most of the sets look like a 1940's Universal Studios backlot tour. Maybe that's intended, but they just look so not real ( fake is the wrong word ).
4 - Mickey Cohen is one banana peel on the floor away from a Abbott and Costello routine. I'm way more afraid of his OCD hand washing than his hinted at ability to control the mob.
5 - The pace is just a little slow. The first episode was way better than the second in pace. Waiting, watching, following, tailing, rinse, repeat got old fast. I don't expect shootouts every 5 minutes, but I got tired of watching people stare at other peoples windows real fast. We get it...
Things I do like are the other cops, including the boyscout. He's pretty cool. Obviously anyone who guns down two guys at dinner is a cool man. Plus, dressing as a priest... darn, that's cold.
I'm reserving judgement till it's done, so I can see where it leads me ....
