Walt embarrassed by an R Crumb comic
Seriously? Walt was embarrassed just looking at an R Crumb comic? I understand if they don't sell adult comics in the store, but ... has he ever seen CLERKS II?

shareForget adult comics, forget Clerks II. Has Walt never listened to one of Kevin Smith's podcasts? Has he never talked to Kevin Smith? If you listen to his podcasts, every other sentence out of his mouth is about jerking off or sucking somebody's dick. I have seriously never heard anyone so obsessed with talking about sucking somebody's dick as Kevin Smith.
shareYou guys seem to forget that as a businessman, he has to make excuses not to buy things that won't sell quickly in his shop. Maybe Walt was making an excuse just because it's not his store's demographic.
shareBut in general Walt is kind of this way, from what I've gathered. Remember his reaction when a cosplayer came through the door? Or Bronies?
It's just strange from someone who works at something so "nerdy" and he seems so close minded.
Remember his reaction when a cosplayer came through the door? Or Bronies?
He still had a fairly close minded reaction the whole thing, and he seemed to have done this "ironically."
sharehe seemed to have done this "ironically."
Like he was making fun of it and thought of it as a joke. The actual bronies, presumably take that sort of thing seriously. Like if I showed up at a Star Trek convention dressed like a Klingon, but was actually laughing the entire time.
Like if you watch a bad movie, you don't actually think it is good. You may however, watch it "ironically."
Sorry. Totally does not sound like Walt at all. Don't know the man personally, but from everything I've heard from his own lips, and those closest to him, Walt doesn't do "ironically".
______
I'm just going by what I've seen on the show. He's said himself he is "straight lased" and seemed to find cosplaying strange, in general when a women came in his store dressed up. The show portrayed them entering the cosplay contest as basically a joke and just for the heck of it, like it's not something he would normally do.
Maybe ironically isn't quite the right word, but he obviously isn't in to My Little Pony, so it seems he wasn't taking it quite as serious as the people who are. Which is normal, it's a little girls show. But not liking it and finding it strange or odd is two different things. I'm a grown man who is massive fan of Power Rangers, so I'm never one to judge even though I'm not a fan of that sort of thing.
He just comes off as not as open to some things. It's a comic book shop. In my eyes all comics should be sold there, not turned down just because he personally is not a fan.
I admittedly have only listened to TESD once or twice. But I have listened to some Smodcast episodes where he was a guest as well.
Are you saying he actually is someone who would normally cosplay? Again, maybe ironically was poor wording, but I'm basically saying he did it for the laughs or maybe for the show itself, but it's not something he's actually interested in.
Like when someone picks up a video game controller and just kind of goofs off and doesn't actually try to win.
His reactions in general, again just from what I've seen on the show itself, are that similar to my father's a few years ago when I went to a convention with him. He's in his 60s and I'm sure it was just sort of a culture shock. He was aware people would be dressed up and things like that but I guess he wasn't expecting grown men dressed like My Little Pony characters or things like that. This is an extreme example, because obviously Walt would be more aware of that thing, but he does just seem to be weirded out by things more than the others.
Oh he was definitely 'taking the piss'. Not taking it seriously and making fun of the situation. You are right: ironically was not the word you were looking for.
Walt is a strange case of open-mindedness and conservatism, to be sure. He can cuss up a storm on the podcasts he's on, but still very straight-laced about most things.

Crumb's work would have been around when he was Walt was a kid too, I wonder if his childhood memories played a part in his decision. Remember the bathtub shot in the opening of the Monkey's tv show? If that affected him so much I imagine Crumb's work could have too.
shareNo idea what you're talking about, sorry. But regardless, Crumb is no worse than his boss's own comics (which Walt illustrated, mind). If it were a case of simple embarrassment, I would be truly surprised.
I know The Stash also carries Heavy Metal, which is way more explicite than Crumb's work.
______
Walt carries and sells all the Bluntman and Chronic comics, as well as Kevin Smith's entire merchandising line. Listen to TESD, and you'll find Walt has a mouth on him far saltier than the others. He is friends with guys who most would prolly avoid IRL.
But, Walt is also very, very true to his own core beliefs. He apparently regarded Crumbs underground comics (created when the CCA was at its strongest) as beyond the pale, whereas nowadays, Independant comics go just as far, but the CCA is toothless. I saw the whole thing as Walt just not being interested in the renegade comics from the Silver Age. But had no problem with others going for it if they wanted to.
______
At The Secret Stash, Bluntman and Chronic Comics would sell much better than Crumb.

shareSo, you missed that topic is 'thing which embarrasses Walt' twice. Care to weigh in on what we're actually talking about?
______
So, you missed my original response to the topic that is, "Walt embarrassed by an R Crumb comic," three times. For the 4th time, and to make it easier for you, my original response was, "You guys seem to forget that as a businessman, he has to make excuses not to buy things that won't sell quickly in his shop. Maybe Walt was making an excuse just because it's not his store's demographic."
Yes, even Walt Flanagan isn't completely honest with everyone all of the time. If you are familiar with Walt, he is a master of the false laugh. A false laugh is by definition, "false." Just because Walt excused himself from an uncomfortable situation with a customer, it does not mean that Walt in fact cannot handle a comic book. Also, if you know the content of Robert Crumb comics, it is really no surprise that anyone would be embarrassed discussing the content in depth on TV. Here is a more tame R Crumb example: http://www.thehydramag.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/lot_daughters2.png

Back when the podcast had Adam and Eve as a sponsor, he wouldn't even be in the room when they recorded the ads, let alone participate. He's very cut and dry about sex stuff.

Don't forget his reaction to the half a second shot of a dude in mobile, public bathtub from the Monkeys TV show intro!
Walt's an interesting guy for sure and it's hard to tell where his lines are. Sometime's he'll shut down other times he'll let ya know he thinks of Spiderman and male ice hockey players during sex (if only to last longer). I hope his story about his best orgasm ever is true too, when he felt like he was a baby again, being cradled by a loving, parernal being.
he also claimed that he has never masturbated since he got married
