Why do ppl go there to sell their stuff?

Most people seem to be collectors and have stuff that is quite valuable.

Why not sell it online? Why use a middle man?

I get that some soccermom would come there to try to get rid of a comic collection or something.

But someone having Iron Man #1 and stuff? Why?

reply

To get on TV.

reply

And some people don't want to be bothered with the hassle of selling it on Ebay.

reply

Its also a great way to do sevice to your local area fans and hobby store owners. If you've got something great allow someone local to visit the store and purchase an item. It kills me how so many feel evilbay is the only way to sell stuff. Keep it local people!

reply

Keep it local and get 1/3 of the price. That way the local area doesn't get screwed, only you do!

As we grow we learn, i have learned that if you don't like me grow up or ignore me.

reply

That's not getting screwed. If you walk into a store to sell something, the initial offer will be less than half its worth. That's the reality of the business. Its your job as the seller bring in stuff you know the dealer can sell, be knowledgable about the item and negotiate a better price. If you want to have a serious conversation about 'getting screwed' lets talk about Ebay.

reply

Mate you are a moron, your job as a seller is to get as much money as possible. Why sell an item to Jim Bob's Classic comics and get $30 when i can go to an action, trade show, comic con or Ebay and get closer to $90?
I deal with Ebay all the time, i have never been screwed because i always check the rating of the person im buy and selling too. If you are a moron, which you seem to be than yes you will get screwed by ebay because you do not seem to be able to comprehend it.
If you are a seller, try to get the best price possible, if you are a buyer try to get the best price possible. That's it. Also more and more comic book stores are buying from ebay, i know the one i go to does. He has things from all over the world that he can sell now that he would not be able to if he bought locally.

As we grow we learn, i have learned that if you don't like me grow up or ignore me.

reply

Way to begin a serious conversation by name calling.

Good job!

reply

Im sorry but i have a very low tolerance to idiots. If everyone did business you way than they would be broke. Your basically saying go into a store and bend over while they rape you and take your money.
The only people i know of who don't like ebay are the ones who don't know how to use it. If you are smart than you would never be ripped off.

As we grow we learn, i have learned that if you don't like me grow up or ignore me.

reply

I can't even begin to explain how *beep* terrible your spelling and grammar are. I'm assuming English is a 2nd language for you?

Internet rules apply here - don't call anyone an idiot until you can string together a proper sentence.

reply

You would be incorrect and my friend my spelling is legit. As for grammar this isn't a paper. I love it how if anyone cannot argue with you they become grammar Nazis.

As we grow we learn, i have learned that if you don't like me grow up or ignore me.

reply

I think you're the idiot here. Shops have to make money, I hate all these complete morons who walk into a shop looking to sell their stuff thinking they are getting retail. Shops can't exist off pennies alone..... Grow up and face the real world.

reply

Huh? i never said that, i think you need to see who you are replying too.

As we grow we learn, i have learned that if you don't like me grow up or ignore me.

reply

to be fair ... I think your both idiots.

however the first person to bring up grammar in an argument is the loser. Internet code #325.2.66 subsection b.

reply

Yeah, I think you completely won your argument. When no one has a rebuttal except for calling you out for grammar or ad hominems, it's because they have nothing left to counter with and are just throwing anything they can at you.

It's true though, there is no logical reason to purposefully sell at 1/3rd the price to "support your local businesses". Selling it yourself does nothing to screw them over, and they should be using Ebay and the like to support themselves as well. The only reason people sell to them like they do on the show is because they are lazy and just want to get rid of it quick, not really caring about maximum profit. Or in the case of the show itself, to get on TV.

reply

After reading through this little exchange, I've decided you're a spiky nitwit with zero sense of how businesses work.

reply

OH SNAP!!! Well said Andrew!

reply

Ebay has knocked the value of many collectibles down. The show lets people do it like it used to be done. Also, if you work in a comic book store, you realize that every day someone wants to sell something to you.

reply

I have to stop you right there. I use Ebay quite a bit and i know that most of the comic book stores around my area do too. Hell even on the last Comic Book Men Walt admitted to buying from there.

The way you want to do business is why most stores go out of business. The internet is the future, Comic book stores can buy an item on there then mark it up in store and people like you would buy it.

reply

It really is to be on TV. The woman who drove all the way from Staten Island is the best example. There are four comic book stores on the island and a few just off the island. To travel to J&SB SS is about 30-40 miles away (depending upon route and where she is located on the island) and one would spend about 40-60 minutes depending on traffic (I could wrong about the time). She probably thinks being on TV is going to improve her social standing in her neighborhood.

reply

Its probably not easy to sell comics online unless you have a really good reputation. Like if you've never sold anything on eBay before and you're just looking to sell a couple items for some extra money, its probably easier to sell it to a store like that. Might not get what its actually worth, but its more convenient than putting in the time to develop a good seller rating on eBay. Also, to be on TV.

Facts are meaningless. You could use facts to prove anything that's even remotely true!

reply

This is exactly the case. I've been burned numerous times both buying and selling through eBay. Written-on pages, photoshopped-out water damage, etc. Then you have people who never bother to check if the copy you're selling is a variant cover or not (Seriously how the F do you not know if you're buying the variant cover or not), and demand refunds even though your book never comes back.

I sell and buy exclusively with known collectors and reputable shops now. Unless you want to drop the cash for your CGC grading, it's the only way to make sure everything's on the level.

reply

Because they're idiots. If you want a guarantee to get the lowest price on your valued comics, then by all means, take it to a comic book store.

reply

I'll add that there are very good selling groups on Facebook. Also your local Craigslist is an option. Selling your valuable collectibles to a comic shop is for ignorant people who don't know any better.
