Honest question: is walt mentally slow?

On TESD he continually seems ignorant of basic concepts of science, history, language and general cultural knowledge.

Not retarded, but perhaps like a 80 IQ?

You are confusing ignorance with intelligence. On subjects which interest him, Walt is a smart as anyone could be. Also, you may be confusing Walt egging-on someone with limited knowledge spouting off down their own rabbit hole. He often does this to Q just to watch him squirm.

The main difference being that low intelligence can't really be helped while voluntary ignorance solely on the person who refuses to learn

Walt has said multiple times how he hated High School, and couldn't wait to be done with it. Didn't even go to his own graduation. It is unsurprising he doesn't recall much about topics he didn't like 30 years later.

Walt is also an genius ball-breaker who often asks a series of seemingly innocent questions, just to watch a blow-hard flail for his own amusement. Even Bry has fallen victim, and he's known Walt his whole life.

In short, what may seem like ignorance is often just Walt setting someone up for ridicule.

Not buying it. It happens all too often where Walt seems completely baffled about a word or words meaning, or how basic concepts work. Take the last episode of tesd for instance he seemed genuinely puzzled that maps and globes could be accurate without satellite imagery. This did not seem to be trying to lead Brian on, it seems like genuine ignorance

Knowledge of cartography isn't an innate skill, it is a learned one. Did you learn it yourself? Or even basic Surveying? I never did, though we are both know that they do exist and trust those who practice them can produce accurate maps.

Walt is definitely ignorant of map-making, but if you listen back, you can tell his line of questions was mostly to make Q stumble over his own words. Ball-busting at its finest.

And again, yes, Walt is ignorant of a ton of things he should have at least heard of. Still doesn't reflect on his obvious intelligence.

Having listened to the latest podcast I would say Walt is sadly a little bit more than simply ignorant. Obviously I wasn't the only one that thought so. Even more evidence is the fact that he's leaning on Getem to provide Sound Logic. Brian Quinn was absolutely right in calling Walt out on the hypocrisy of Blind Faith while dismissing proven science

reply

What episode does Walt do this? That's an issue that should never be overlooked or dismissed.

reply

And yes I did learn cartography
I received my M.S in Geography/GIS in 2013. Basically 2 solid years of graduate level education in geography, cartography, and surveying, then spent 4 years working as a surveyor for the USFS.

None of that is necessary to understand the past few hundred years man has had the ability to accurately map coastlines.

reply

And yes I did learn cartography

Things become clearer.

Let me ask you: how many of your K-12 classmates followed you? I ask because you seem to be assuming that because a comic-book store manager does not have your level of cartographic knowledge, he must therefore be mentally handicapped.

Aside from the fact he has managed to keep one of the hardest of all niche retail businesses thriving.

Either Walt is some kind of Rainman, or he is simply smarter in some areas and not others. You know, like most of us. You included.

You should totally listen to the new TESD. I guarantee you will love it! Walt is in prime 'ignorant and couldn't care less' form.

On TESD, Walt very intentionally acts that way. He likes to play devil's advocate and just explore thoughts for the fun of it. It's just like when he would chastise people who download CDs illegally one second then be handed a stack of ripped CDs the next on mic.

Except vocabulary. He's not great with some words. I just don't think it's an area he enjoys.

Lol listning to Tell em Steve-Dave episode 181 where they're discussing any acceptable uses of the word 'retarded' and he's like "Couldn't you use it like couldn't you say the word in in in the like the context of flame retarded?" It's about 7 minutes until they address the difference in spelling of the different words. It made me remember this post.
