When was the last comedy sequel that was *actually* good?

I'm trying to think......was it 1995 (Ace Ventura 2 - not a classic, but genuinely funny, fun to watch.)

Wow. Anchorman 2, Dumb & Dumber 2, and now this....

Austin Powers 2 (1999) was okay I guess. I cannot think of one from the last decade that I would recommend. Not one.

I'm not even going to mention Whole Ten Yards or Analyze That... oops I guess I just did.

Your thoughts?

Rush Hour 2? I also enjoyed This is 40. HB2 was at least better than 22 Jumpstreet.

this movie, I thought this was a really good sequel to the classic original.

I know I'm the minority here, but I liked Horrible Bosses 2 much better than the first(and I quite liked the first in it's own right). Horrible Bosses 2 might be in my top 5 comedies of all time).

I have an immature "unsophisticated" taste in comedies, but these are the comedy sequels that I liked better than the originals.

* 22 Jump Street was superb, 21 Jump Street was good but overrated.
* Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay was great (All due to Rob Corddry). Harold and Kumar go to White Castle was a pleasant surprise, but not all that good.
* Hangover 2 was better than the first despite it being a complete rehash. This might be due to me liking the scenery in Thailand and I found it to be more chaotic than the first. Hangover 1 isn't that big of a journey.

Shrek 2 (2004)
Toy Story 2 (1999)
A Very Brady Sequel (1996)

If Bruno were to count as a sequel to Borat, then that's the most recent one I can think of.

I definitely agree that the vast majority of comedy sequels are horribly unfunny. Actually, comedy films in general seem to suck a lot these days. Although, I do think people have been a bit too harsh on Dumb and Dumber To. I haven't seen Horrible Bosses 2 yet, but I was pleasantly surprised with the first one. I wonder if I'll hate the sequel.

I actually did like "Anchorman 2," but I mostly prefer the theatrical cut. I wasn't too crazy about the R-rated extended cut.

To the person who mentioned "Nutty Professor II: The Klumps," well it's good that you're a Janet Jackson fan and that is probably why you liked it, but I really didn't like that movie.

Oh yeah that movie! I found it much much better then the first one. AND it has a (slightly) better rating on RT and IMDB.

Also I thought Anchorman 2, Horrible bosses 2, Jump street 22, Ace ventura 2, Austin Powers 2, were all good...to each their own!

I personally thing there have been plenty of well done comedy sequels (Dumb and Dumber To, Horrible Bosses 2, Anchorman 2's original cut) but they all pale in comparison to their predecessors.

The one comedy sequel I thought actually outdid its original was Austin Powers: Spy Who Shagged Me.

Anchorman 2 and The Hangover 3 were pretty good. H2 was hot garbage and too full of itself.

only ones I can think of are Austin Powers 2 and Shrek 2

I enjoyed Anchorman 2, but it wasn't that memorable. Dumb and Dumber 2 had its moments, but was overall a disappointment. Horrible Bosses 2 I actually found hilarious and a worthy successor, but other than that I'd say 2012 with American Reunion or 2011 with Harold and Kumar Xmas. I'm sure plenty of people hated those though.

As for Austin Powers, I think #2 is a great comedy sequel. Most sequels just recycle the same ideas and gags from the first one and it's a sad case of diminishing returns. AP2 shamelessly does tons of things almost exactly the same as the first one, but it's a rare case of everything working better the second time around.

22 Jump Street also somewhat avoids the usual pitfalls of sequels by acknowledging the trite and tired conventions and mocking them.
