When was the last comedy sequel that was *actually* good?

I'm trying to think......was it 1995 (Ace Ventura 2 - not a classic, but genuinely funny, fun to watch.)

Wow. Anchorman 2, Dumb & Dumber 2, and now this....

Austin Powers 2 (1999) was okay I guess. I cannot think of one from the last decade that I would recommend. Not one.

I'm not even going to mention Whole Ten Yards or Analyze That... oops I guess I just did.

Your thoughts?

22 jump street and this were both funny and good.

All of the above being mainstream, matinee bait(nothing derogatory meant herein: personally got more than a coupla laughs out of HB2) with nary a foreign, "independent", or older than past two decades film up for the mentioning. Do you still be find your own disappointment surprising, DP?

reply

Ummm, nothing older than two decades? My post's question was when was the last time a comedy sequel was good? My answer is 1995, or perhaps 1999. There were a lot of good ones before that, but that was not the point of my post.

And, please, feel free to name a foreign, or "independent" comedy sequel in that time period, I would be glad to find them.

Finally, you described all of my examples at "Mainstream, matinee bait". Well, my point is that I very much enjoyed all of the first, original movies (Horrible Bosses, Anchorman, Dumb & Dumber, Whole 9 Yards, etc.) which you, I'm sure, would consider that label as well. It's the sequels where the quality drops considerably, and I wish that was not the case.

reply

Austin Powers 2, IMO was the best one of the 3. Ace Ventura 2 was good too. It's hard to decide which one of those 2 is better.

I agree with the poster above on 22 Jump Street, not on HB2 though.

I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in.

reply

Dumb and Dumber To was actually pretty good. American Pie 2 was decent, American Reunion was great. 22 Jump Street sucked. Laughed like two times.

reply

Oh, And Ocean's 12 was aggressively bad, just awful.

The Nutty Professor II: The Klumps. But then again, I'm a die-hard Janet Jackson fan! So, I don't know how valid my opinion could be on this matter. 

reply

Agreed; A quality sequel from 2000. (But that giant hamster part was really, really stupid.)

Clerks 2

...

reply

Yeah, had to go back to Clerks 2 on this also.

Ace Ventura 2 is very good for what it is, changing itself up enough to be a fresh experience.

Austin Powers 2 was a great full house theatrical experience though it's not aged well at all imo (I prefer AP3 of them to be honest).

Back to the Future II if we're going there, a good movie following up a masterpiece.

reply

oceans 12 was better than 11 or 13.

anyway, this movie is terrible.

reply

I disagree on the quality of Ocean's 12, but let's just say here that it was not a comedy. Apart from the lost in translation that they pulled on Matt Damon, there was little that was either funny or intended to be.

Do you accept the Scream trilogy, Wes Craven's parody of horror movies as comedy? Scream 2 was good (except that when someone brings up The Empire Strikes Back as a sequel that's better than the original, Timothy Oliphant's character ruled out movies that were planned as parts of trilogies from the start).

When I heard that they were doing a sequel to Miss Congeniality, I thought it would be horribly derivative, but it was as good as the original. Some critics said it was even better--that if the sequel had been released first, there would be no point in making the original movie.

reply

Yeah good points, & while not a traditional comedy by any means, satire perhaps and Scream 2 was better than the first in my opinion.

And to the user who pointed out Clerks 2, I would have to say I agree and very much enjoyed that picture, though all of the best humor is in the first hour and the last act got a bit too conventional/sentimental for my taste.

reply

I'm actually drawing a blank on this one. Comedies do get the worst sequels though, yeah. Or at least ones that aren't in the same league. I guess Christmas Vacation was okay, but that's really reaching far back.

Comedy in general hasn't been very good since the early 90s. And the last greats of those were all very satire based.

For what it's worth, I remember enjoying quite a bit of Harold and Kumar 2 from 2008. Never saw the 3rd one.
