Not Great, But Should Have a Place in Your DVR

Horrible Bosses 2 lacks the energy and sweetness of the first film. The three characters played by Bateman, Sudeikis, and Day were kind of nice, innocent guys working for horrible people in the first movie. In this second go round, they are their own bosses, but are a bit nastier to each other. Sudeikis and Day didn't seem as stupid in the first film, but here there are almost catatonically stupid. Its makes them more cartoonish than realistic which I think makes it harder to care about them.

Bateman has always been a personal favorite of mine going back to his days on the Hogan Family TV show. He does seem to play the same character in all of his movies so he might want to consider spreading his wings and playing a villain once in a while. I couldn't stand Jennifer Aniston when she was on Friends, but I really like her movie roles. She is sweet, funny, and as I always suspected, has a dirty side. Okay, its just the character but a guy can hope. Her Julia is over the top slutty and it works in this movie. She has some of the more graphically sexual lines and she delivers them without a hint of irony about her public persona. The outtakes are hilarious because she does break character on some of the more grotesque comments.

Christoph Waltz is kind of wasted here. It seems they just wanted his acting clout to give the sequel some pinache. He's funny and dark, but that's about it. Kevin Spacey has a funny cameo where he just insults the guys and Jamie Foxx gets some extra screen time in this film and makes the most of it.

Chris Pine plays Waltz' wacky son perfectly. His performance really makes the movie work. He is becoming quite a fine actor. He can play heroic characters (Star Trek), comedic characters (This Means War), or action heroes (Jack Ryan). His character in this movie is more on par with his nuanced performance in Smokin' Aces.

I liked Horrible Bosses 2, but when some of the biggest laughs (for me anyway) came from the outtakes (Jennifer Aniston trying out variations on the bathroom break lines or Bateman and Sudeikis breaking character to discuss a foul smell, etc.) it reflects poorly on the film. Still, it looked like everyone was having fun and that comes across in the film.

My memory foam pillow says it can't remember my face. I can tell its lying.
