Ending

I see a lot of posts about the ending being a letdown or that people didnt understand it. What actually happens? Since my local cimema isnt showing it.

The movie builds up to something hinted at earlier in the film but cuts to black before you see it. It's left to interpretation I guess, but I think it's pretty obvious what happens.

If you do want spoilers:

Max tells a story in the car about a kid (Which would have been Max) who used to stand in front of cars down country lanes and it caused a crash that killed a driver. At the end we see a wide shot of her driving full force at him, standing in the middle of the road and it smashes to black. Personally, I think she was so close by the time it cut that she did hit him.

So i got that himt. But the whole max thing was pretty creepy (ended up going to see it tonight)

*so max set up the whole fake hotel thing to lure and kill people? But why? And how did noone manage to overpower him? And how did he manage to get from place to place in the maze so quickly?

reply

I saw this at Frightfest in London last August and the director explained that what Max was doing was subjecting people to an experiment "in fear". He wanted to see if he could provoke a total stranger into trying to kill him.

It's pretty rare when ANY film leaves an ending open to interpretation that doesn't piss me off a little (or in some cases a lot), but I actually really enjoyed everything about this. Probably because like the poster above said, she was so close to hitting him when it cut to black, it seemed pretty easy to discern that she did hit him. Great, tense flick!

About the 'place to place' thing, I was thinking that too. Then I thought maybe he walks through the actual forest (he knows well) and they connect to the roads. Sort of like the actual center between these skinny roads and ...ah..i dunno...over it.

reply

Probably because he knew the area so well.

And it's a horror film, the baddies always a bit super human. Just one of the things you have to accept when you see a film like this.

reply

If you watch the trailer, there's a shot of the car crashing that's presumably an extension of the final scene. So the original intention of the script implies that she hit him and crashed or missed him and crashed.

reply

I think is more related to the story Max tells about a boy (probably himself) who used to stand in front of cars to provoke accidents.

reply

I think a better conclusion would be...

that right before she's about to hit him, he shoots her in the head and she crashes. Nihilistic, sure. But far more impacting.

reply

I just wanted to see the guy get creamed by the car, cut to black? what a disappointment!

Haha I agree wholeheartedly.. I wanted to see her run that mother f'r down... Although I cannot see it being plausible that she missed him given the distance between them when it cut to black.. So that makes me happy.
The guy that played Max was pretty good lookin' though...

reply

I was thinking that too! That would've been FANTASTIC.

reply

I think I better ending would be that she pulled up just in front of him and gets out...we're thinking he's going to kill her but it turns out she is in on the plot and used as the lure to get victims.

Not bad...

Not bad at all...

I don't want to spoil another film for you, but your suggesting that reminds me of another fairly recent horror film that was actually quite close to what you said 

I now have over 7000 films; many of them very rare and OOP. I LOVE to trade. PLEASE ASK! 

Y'all need to go back and watch the first scene or two where Lucy writes on the wall of the bathroom stall. And she runs over the guy, shocking some people missed that. Good movie. This film reminded me of "Straw Dogs" a little bit.

reply

That is a very good point about Straw Dogs (original, not the crap remake). I got that vibe as well. Especially the fight scene where Tom got de-manned. Glad to see I'm not totally insane thinking this.

I tried to stop it at the very last frame before it cut to black... couldn't quite get it, but from what I saw, she was so close to him that even if she did swerve off the road, Lucy would have hit Max. It's very unlikely that she would have done that though, so I think it's pretty safe to say that she hit him.

reply

We don't see the end so it is left up to our imagination what happened. It also leaves the possibility for another movie.
