Name me one, Oscar Worthy Disaster Movie that is not based on Real Event

I mean I Dare you to find one. Because im pretty sure there is none. Frankly you would think that people would know what to expect from a Disaster Movie by now. Cheesy Acting, And a Thin Plot. All for the benefit to seeing sh!t Blow up. If you going into a Disaster movie for some deep, dramatic, thought provoking experience. Than frankly your a moron. Im Sorry, but its True.

Towering Inferno. The Poseidon Adventure.

Towering Inferno.

I was going to name that too.

Contagion counts as a disaster movie?

reply

It's people like you that is the reason crappy writing is still an acceptable artform.

We as viewers don't have to just automatically let crappy writing slide because its a disaster movie. With a competent writer you can have both exploding buildings AND a plot that doesn't look like a 12 year old just wiped it's ass with.

reply

LOL the guy is only saying that is a bit naive to go to these kind of movies with high expectations, how is his fault that crappy writing is still an acceptable artform. ?
There is ALWAYS gonna be more bad movies than good ones, that's not up to us, the studios are the ones that decide and they only care about the $$$.

The Day After Tomorrow is an award worthy, greatly acted show, based on an event that happened once before (just ask the dinosaurs).

reply

Wrong. The dinosaurs had a meteor, not sudden and severe ice ages.

reply

The Day After Tomorrow was based on a Pseudo-Science *beep* Novel By Art Bell of Coast2CoastAM. You know, the same *beep* that hosts late night wierdos talking about BigFoot, Lizard people controlling the planet from inside a hollow Earth, Aliens at Area 51, etc...

It is absolutely NOT based on a "real event"

I joined the Navy to see the world, only to discover the world is 2/3 water!

I'd say Deep Impact is a really good disaster movie. Or are we not counting asteroids and comets in this? It was certainly one I really enjoyed as a kid and it had heart. Certainly a lot better than most of todays attempts.

I'm not sure I would call it Oscar worthy, but you're definitely correct that it is amazing. The biggest issue was the love story between the teens, that brought it down a notch. My stepfather once said (and it one of the only times I have ever agreed with him), that if they took the characters from Armageddon and combined them with the science and writing of Deep Impact, it would have been the perfect disaster film.

Well, I saw this movie with low expectations, and I still think it is a waste of time. Every movie has its share of suspension of disbelief, but there is a limit.

As for your question, The Poseidon Adventure (1972) is considered a classic.

reply

If I understand correctly we should either expect crap or an Oscar nominated performance?

reply

I go with Towering Inferno.

I have been bent and broken, but, I hope, into a better shape, Grimm

Titanic?

The Titanic actually happened....?

If I were in charge of handing out Oscars, this is one of the types of films that would win the most. I'd also give out a crapload of Oscars to horror films, comedies--especially absurdist comedies, SciFi, thrillers, action films, kids/family films, etc.

A lot of films that win Oscars I don't care very much for. I like "genre" flicks.
