Should be thrown in jail....

So you are a rescue helicopter pilot, and you are flying that machine.... But the moment a big quake starts and people are dying all around you, you abuse that machine to try and rescue specifically your ex wife, then abandon the city you are in to fly to another city where your daughter is, even though you know you are safe, you choose to get her, instead of rescueing other tax payers who are in peril. Even though that last thing is your only job and the reason they bought that helicopter for you to fly in.....

I would do the exact same thing. All that taxpayer yak goes right out the window when the s h!t hits the fan.

reply

I Agree 100% I've would have done the same!!

reply

Hey if my kids were in trouble I'd have done exactly the same thing I'm afraid.

reply

Clearly the OP has no kids or spouse... or anyone they care about more than their job.

I think he justified it by the helicopter being damaged. It had no winch which meant he had no crew and no orders, so when the call came in from his ex he simply 'borrowed' it.

Not as bad as when Will Smith actively TWOC's a working helicopter in ID4.

Yeah, I'm sure after all is said and done, they'll come after him.

It shows how movie logic, which is a form of suspended disbelief, wins out over everyday logic. In the movie, the crowds of civilians were story-expendable, and we were supposed to think of them as nameless movie extras. The family members were story-significant.

A strangely analogous situation can be seen in The Mask (1994). Stanley (Jim Carrey) escapes from jail, hits a cop in the head (or neck) with his own service revolver, and then kidnaps another cop at gunpoint. But it's all forgotten about, and he faces no consequences, and there's a happy, romantic ending. In real life, he would have substantial gotten jail time.

1) its a movie.
2) with the level of damage you think one helicopter one way or another is gonna make a difference?

reply

Yes you could save dozens of people.

99.9999999% of the world's male population would've done the exact same thing as the Rock.

As a man, it's always your job to protect your family, that's instinct, that's embedded in our DNA virtually.

This is the most idiotic post I've seen in my entire existence and I've seen a lot of crap on here over the last 15 years I've been on here.

Go home, read a book, get an education, make some muffins, stop crying.

I think people are confusing two separate topics here.

Should the Rock probably get in trouble for his actions? For rescuing his wife, no I don't think so. He was already in the area and it wasnt going out of his way to come save her. But flying across the state to find his daughter is different. Those hours he spent flying to San Francisco could have been spent saving people right after he picked up his wife. He could have saved dozens of lives by picking up a couple loads of people and getting them out of the city. He was on duty and flying government property, which makes him responsible for doing what he can.

Whether or not you agree with his decision is a completely separate topic. I think most people would have done what he did and accepted the potential legal consequences.
