Why do lots of films have big swirly cloud things in the sky with lights shooting out?

shareNo one in Hollyweird has an original idea. I remember back in the 90s, some movie had an explosion with a ring of fire jetting out. Then EVERYONE had to do that. Even Lucus redid the death star at the end of Star Wars to include the ring.
