What the film should've been:

Although I'm only sometimes a fan of James's AVGN work, I'll admit that most to all of his independent films are thoroughly well made and interesting. The man understands what he is doing, and I think he can make a good movie if given to him.

I know James has stated that he loves "a day in the live" type movies, so AVGN: The Movie should've been just that: a day in the life type of movie. What the hell does the nerd do all day, just play awful games? Surely he lives a life of his own, surely he has a job or friends somewhere. What about the nerd's parents? The best parts of the movie were the scenes that dived in to the nerd's homelife outside of gaming, but they didn't last much longer than the 15-minute mark. Imagine someone with the temper and crude mentality doing menial and basic every day tasks. I don't think the film should've been a massive action/adventure romp, especially with the minuscule budget it had. The nerd can get into adventures, but they should've been real world adventures, making the comedic world of the nerd clash with reality.

If Doug Walker ever makes an NC movie, it needs to be like this.

I completely agree, even though I thoroughly enjoyed the film for what it was, I thought it should have been something along the lines of American Movie or Clerks. or something like Borat where it's a road trip but also a semi-documentary.

I do think he sort of aimed a bit too high with this film, even though he managed to raise quite a bit of money, it's not enough to squeeze such a plot out of "home movie territory", I can see why people didn't enjoy it, but like I said, I liked it quite a bit and watched it multiple times since it came out.

I really really REALLY hope all the negativity didn't bring him down too much, because James clearly has a unmatched passion for cinema, if you saw his older indie shorts, his Monster Madness videos, all his mini-documentaries, his countless insightful reviews and, of course, Cinemassacre 200, you know exactly what I'm talking about. He's a genuine talent who definitely needs another shot at making a feature, I feel like he has some great films in him, so bring it on.

I don't know, wouldn't sound like the type of movie James would have any passion making. Sounds pretty by the numbers too, not something worth releasing in theaters at all.

My idea is that it'd be a classic, 70s/80s (or maybe old universal even) style horror movie (clearly his favorite movie genre), in which the Nerd has to use his gaming skill to survive numerous dangerous situations. ET, an alien, could have easily been incorporated into the horror aspect, with the last act maybe taking place in the the area identical to the one in the Atari game. It would feature the Nerd and all regulars, which would sporadically die throughout the movie. Hell even the clichéd token black guy and token hot girl from the movie would have worked better as intentionally clichéd side characters made just so they could die (the black guy always dies first kind of thing). It would have kept the plot simpler, the pace up, the visuals more interesting, and there'd be actual tension and consequence throughout the scenes since characters were actually dying, albeit comedically.

I'd love it if James did a proper horror film or even a horror comedy. The dream sequence with the zombies in that mirror attraction thing at the carnival is so well shot and edited. Probably my favorite scene in the film.

Exactly.

James might have missed a trick. With the dying off of local blockbuster stores and video game retailers, James (and Mike of course) could have worked in a store like this. Watching the world move on without them.
Yes it's very Clerks, but that movie was nearly 30 years ago.
Still, I enjoy the movie as it is.

AVGN is supposed to be over the top. Making it about a bunch of nerds sitting around talking wouldn't have warranted being a feature at all, could have been made 5 years ago. And yeah, it would pretty much literally be Clerks.

It's seems like he figured that he was never going to make another movie after this, so he tried to cram all the genres he likes into one.
