I just watched this movie on Netflix and I was greatly suprised by how much I liked it. It wasn't as scary as I was hoping but I still enjoyed it and I don't think it deserves the amount of hate it got. I would give it an 8/10.
I completely agree! I will never understand the hate for this film.
It had intelligent characters (a smart, classy blonde teenager too...how often is THAT ever shown?!), and the film was never dull.
It dared to be a little different (such as the car scene, and adding a creepy mysterious evil kid like Robbie). It could have been better yes, and had a little more original ending.
But I liked it a lot, its much better than Part 2, which oddly, few seem to criticize!
"I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus." "Didn't he discover America?" "Penfold, shush."
I think 8/10 is going a bit far. I gave it a very respectable 6/10, but then I've seen a lot of bad films. In my mind, anything over 5 means perfectly watchable. Some films I've given 8/10 deserve Oscars, so I guess our ranking is a bit different.
PA4 had its flaws like all the rest, mainly the same flaw its predecessors suffer from. They build tension and then forget where the third act starts, so the tension becomes slack and you realise there's not enough time left for anything substantial to happen. I appreciate the film makers using the less is more philosophy, but when less is not enough, you need balance. However, this problem is fixed somewhat in the latest instalment, The Marked Ones, which has much better pacing and is probably the best in the series so far because of it. I did think the blonde lead actress in PA4 was a good casting decision and I enjoyed her performance. Also the ending ties in nicely with TMO re the coven of witches.
I'm still interested enough to see where they take it in PA5 (6) next October.
I thought Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones had great potential, and a very good last 1/4. But it had TERRIBLE pacing. It took soooo long to get going! All we seemed to see was a series of days in the life of urban teenagers who used the F-bomb literally every 3 seconds. Tedious. I love found-footage films, and the shaky cam does not usually bother me much. But this was so bad I became sick.

Uh, have you seen the other films in the series? Compared to most films, yes, the pacing was terrible, but compared to the pacing of its predecessors, TMO is a god damn Jason Bourne film. While the initial first act is slow to unfold, once it does, events unfold consistently throughout. Again, compared to its predecessors, not in general. If you count the time stamps of events and significant scenes that took place throughout the film - you know, where things actually happen - I think you'll find they far exceed the earlier entries.
I agree, i enjoyed this installment as well. Initially i thought it was a bit lacking, i still enjoyed it but i thought it was probably the weakest so far. Still good though.
Then when all the hate came out which i thought was a bit undeserved, and i saw the same criticisms all the time like,
if wyatt is hunter who's robbie?
Or, how and why did hunter get adopted just to be kidnapped again?
I thought about the film and after a few re watches i tried to analyse these criticisms and understand what this film is showing us, and look at the bigger picture and how it fits in with the series, and certainly after seeing the marked ones i rate this film a lot better.
I do think there is more to this than people think and it works well for me within the franchise and storyline.
i know it was a bit rushed to produce so the execution could have been better but it still worked for me.
