And really, why the elaborate setup to try to kill Alex in an apparent suicide when, once again, she can just walk up behind her and break her neck like she is going to do with everyone else?
Possessed witches take orders. They cannot act without planning and agreement from the coven heads. The females get possessed and enhanced, and the males get sacrificed and stay in the incorporeal realm where they have more power. The witches are their anchor. Some summon, some carry out various stages of purely human duties that are apart of any ceremony or plan. That's why there are so many of the females there that have been possessed. It takes great power to anchor an incorporeal spirit to a location. The glyphs are used as conduits.

Also, the demon needs to gain strength. It did this in Part I, as well.
It caused small troubles to start, as it is weaker. But as the targets get more fearful & more angry, it feeds off this & gets much much stronger.
Hence why Alex was able to, barely, escape from the car scene. The demon wasn't quite strong enough.
