Was I the only one that was a bit put off by how crowded the human settlement was?

It's not like they had tens of thousands of people. Why the heck did they have to cram everyone into that one tower in San Francisco? The movie clearly shows that the houses in the outlying suburbs were still habitable and I'm sure that plenty of the other buildings in downtown San Fran were also available.

I just couldn't get over that every scene in the human colony looked so crowded and chaotic.

Survival instinct. And they just survived a global epidemic, civil war and economic breakdown. The survivors chose to stick together.

I get that, but if you're going to be THAT cramped you're just asking for other diseases like the flu to spread like crazy throughout the community. I'm assuming that they were only immune to the Simian Flu and not the half dozen other varieties that kill tons of people each year.

Also with that kind of urban crush sanitation has got to be an issue as well I would think.

Absolutely! They're not, as the OP suggests, going to head off into the outer suburbs, seeking relief from the congestion. They are going to keep hanging together.🐭

Not only was there no social distancing within the human settlement, but no one was wearing a mask

Yes. It was kinda stupid how crowded it was. It's been like 10 years after fall of civilization or something. Many building and houses were intact. There was no threat from apes since we saw each party was surprised when they meat each other.

People would definitely not stay all so close and disperse.

They elude to some really bad stuff going down, and it's very possible it was other humans. They fortified in a stronghold, just like medieval times, and that makes sense.
