Twin Peaks

This series sort of reminded me of Twin Peaks, superficially. Instead of Laura Palmer we had Tui.

reply

yup, minus the humour.

it was like twin peaks meets john from cincinnati meets the killing

reply

yup, minus the humour.

And Tui not being dead, and the supernatural elements and a strong female lead.
But there were trees... and coffee, no pie though.

TV has taught me that all air ducts are spotlessly clean.

reply

"No pie though" LOL

The pie was in "Fargo"...

reply

Into tape recorder: That was a tuna fish sandwich on whole wheat, slice of cherry pie, and a cup of coffee. Damn good food. Diane, if you ever get up this way that cherry pie is worth a stop.

You mustn't judge yourself. That's what the internet is for.

I felt that connection as well. Also reminded me of AMC's The Killing and Winter's Bone.

I actually thought there was a good amount of humor in this show. Many of the scenes with GJ and the women in Paradise tended to be quite funny.

Comparing this to Twin Peaks is like comparing vinegar to vintage champagne!

Its that man again!!

reply

I actually felt that way too. Though I think it is because of the way the show ends, like the ending credits. After I first saw them I began to feel the Twin Peaks vibe so I think the ending credits sort of encourage that thought. And then of course making the Laura Palmer and Tui connection.

"I know it was you, Fredo. You broke my heart. You broke my heart!"

And the 2013 award for stating the obvious goes to.......Spookyman.
Pretty lazy observation.

reply

Well I never watched Twin Peaks so any apparent similarities are not obvious to me. I did however thoroughly enjoy this from start to finish, mainly for the fact that I never really formed any concrete opinion about what was going on. Pretty dysfunctional community but that's about it. It also didn't shy away from the controversial which to me always makes for good drama.

Don't be late, don't hesitate, this dream can pass just as fast as lightning.

Campion has never hidden her liking for David Lynch's work. In fact, in one episode of TOTL, a character mentions Lynch's "Blue Velvet". That said, I don't see much similarity to "Twin Peaks" outside the obvious small town setting and secrets. TP is clearly an influence, but to me, the result/execution is very different.

"Just forget you ever saw it. It's better that way."

reply

There is a certain vibe of getting drawn into the setting and a focus on the quirks of the people. While the show is somewhat different, it seems to come from a similar background of filmmaking. To the degree that I would wish Lynch to be a bit more like this show - working the unconventional into the conventional.

Thank you Dr Clitterhaus. If I may return the favour... And the award for the pretentious git of this thread goes to... Dr Clitterhaus :)

The poor man's version of it.

Like the glass of water before me reminds me of the ocean.

reply

Well, not overly surprising in that it really is nothing more than a very cheap and nasty rip-off of the far superior Twin Peaks, and The Killing, and other similar but much better programmes.
