The Women’s Commune and Confusing Dialogue.

I’m a few episodes into the series and am enjoying it overall. However, despite the fact that most of the dialogue is well written, I’ve found that not only do the women at Paradise look and act weirdly but they’re written weirdly and therefore, speak weirdly. Here are extracts of dialogue to illustrate my point:

"Did you ever try masturbating?" suggests one crate-dweller to another. "It's very relaxing and it's not fattening." "I like penis," comes the response. "Me too." Another explains her life before she found the commune thus: "I had a chimpanzee called Brad. We slept together."

Firstly, can anyone make sense of those extracts I’ve just illustrated? Secondly and more importantly, does anyone agree with me about this criticism of the writing?

I think that exchange was meant for comic relief. I laughed anyway. The Hippy women were quite accurate I thought. I grew up near to a new age cult a bit like that. I think its mainly poking fun at new age culture and first world neurosis.

That chimpanzee story is based on something that really happened isn't it?

It's supposed to be funny and weird...a bit of comic relief. Off the wall and bent dialog seems to be a staple of Aussie cinema.

RIP Philip Seymour Hoffman 1967-2014... a tremendously great and talented actor.

That exchange was actually the only enjoyable scene in the commune for me. It's so just so deadpan funny.
