Childbirth

Pretty unrealistic childbirth scene, especially considering she was only 12 or 13.
The baby's head looked as big as hers. No vernix. Who cut the cord? The "Newborn" looked to be about six months old.
In reality a pregnant person that young would probably need a c section.

Yeah, you had to suspend a lot of disbelief for that scene. A 12-year-old carrying to term, delivering without any problems, etc. Though to be fair, we can't really expect them to show a real newborn. I can overlook the baby being 6 months old.

You're talking about a show where a drug boss is openly doing his business and a police chief turns out to run a pedophile network. Realism isn't what Jane Campion wanted.

reply

^^ agreed

Who do you think are running pedophile networks... homeless people? You think there aren't law enforcement types keeping those going? It happened in Belgium - read up on the Marc Dutroux case.

And Matt wasn't exactly openly doing it - he had the women come over to help in the guise of being cleaning ladies. People knew what he was doing but he wasn't flaunting it openly. I would say this is a pretty realistic scenario that happens in rural, economically struggling towns.

Maybe you're right there. I've seen more unrealistic things on television, I guess.

reply

Guess you don't read the news much to see corrupt police forces working along with criminals and doing what those criminals want...ever taken a look at things in Mexico or other countries? Yeah, and realism isn't what Campion wanted. 

Ah yes. Mexico and New Zealand. Absolutely no difference there.

Let me rephrase, unrealistic in the specific setting it's situated in.

reply

Ah yes, failure to see the big picture and that is corruption can happen anywhere...even New Zealand....

But there is a tad bit of difference between a country with functional institutions versus a country where corruption is the norm.

But that being said, I do agree that I talk more out of emotion than out of rational thinking. It's interesting why I can enjoy shows like Deadwood or Breaking Bad, while Top of the Lake pisses me off somehow.

reply

We're not talking about a whole country that is corrupt. We are talking corruption within a small community.

I enjoyed Deadwood very much but I've not seen Breaking Bad. I guess you'll have to sort through what it is about Top of the Lake that pisses you off. Some people just simply did not fancy it so maybe you are one of those people.

I've found it very odd as well especially since they mentioned it in show that she will have problems to give a birth natural way because of her age + combine that with her being very slim Asian, much less developed than some 12yo caucasian girls I don't really see this working.

As for the cord it's not big deal to cut it by herself (if she can give birth then for sure ain't no big deal to cut the cord for her), we don't know time frame before camera moves there + they can't show newborn for obvious reasons, so I don't really care about these 2 isues, but she giving natural birth by herself in forrest being 12yo slim not developed Asian.
