Tui's mother and Johnno?

Why didn't Tui's mother play a larger role in the story? Why was Johnno half naked in Tui's mother's store when Robin first sees him? Thanks!

Why Richard, it profits a man nothing to give his soul for the whole world... but for Wales?

I had the impression that he was crashing on her couch, or something equally innocent. She was his step mum for many years, it could have been sexual but I don't get that vibe.

reply

I also thought it was kinda strange.

It was probably a bit of red herring and, also, it was showing how incestuous everyone was in that town.

reply

I like your red herring idea. I'm still wondering why Tui's mother played such a small part in the story, though.

^Most likely because she played a very small part in Tui's father's life.

Do you have any thoughts on why Tui's mother played such a small role in the story?

Those are all good thoughts. I still can't help feeling it was a bit of a cop-out by the show's creators not to include her more. Thanks for the input.

The beauty of this show is that is doesn't try to dumb itself down by explaining too much. In real life people go in and out of each others lives, and so Kimmie just doesn't happen to be a huge part of this story. Tui is clearly legally in Matt's care, and Kimmie quite probably has very little to do with her. We don't know for sure when Kimmie and Matt split but given Kimmie absence from the show I would assume that Matt essentially raised Tui by himself (with his sons) and so Tui has little to no bond with her mother. TBH I watched the first ep long before I finished the series so I could be wrong here, but it makes sense to me.

As far as Jonno and Kimmie's relationship goes, they are both cast outs, whether voluntarily or not, from Matt's world, where they presumably got to know each other, chronology permitting (I believe it does). If they were members of the same family at some point in the past it makes sense that they would seek support from one another. Perhaps there is an underlying implied attraction but I doubt the reason for drawing attention to it is sinister. Keep in mind that Matt never committed incest in the end, and that the real theme here is not incestuousness or anything of the sort, but the poisonousness of ruthless patriarch Matt's tentacular influence over the entire town. The implications of incest between Robin and Jonno and Tui and Matt (and Robin's relationship to Matt) are all symptoms of Matt's evil, not the sources of evil. In the case of Tui's rape, Matt is absolved of her assault but bears responsibility nonetheless because of his partnership with Al. If anything the incest-related theme here is almost that incest shouldn't matter, only consent. Of course the show doesn't quite go this far and manages to wiggle its way (perhaps a bit too easily) out of that awkward situation, but it compels us to have pity and even understanding for Robin when she challenges Jonno to be with her even when she believes they may be related. That scene is not condemning, it is simply acknowledging of the heart-wrenching situation.

An interesting read and good points. I agree with you. :)

For some reason I completely misunderstood Johnno to be Tui's half brother which would then make Tui's mom, Johnno's mom. However, I get that that was wrong so perhaps they were just friends because they had a language in common. He was portrayed as a womanizer for a few series so perhaps there was something more. I don't think it really matters.

Was Johnno's mom also the mom of the other two sons?

I was under the impression that Johnno's mom was Tui's mom for a very long time, given he lived at her place and not at Matt's place with the other sons and he never did anything with Matt. I kept wondering why he didn't look a bit Asian, and also he looked too old to be her son.

reply

No, she was Thai/Asian and apparently 2nd wife of Matt and mother only to Tui, Johnno and other 2 brothers had different mother from 1st marriage, so in the end even if he would be screwing his former Asian step-mom it would be technically OK since they are not related by blood at all and after divorce also not by papers, so he is free to screw her, although we never know if they are only friends or more.
