Was it because there wasn't a lot of promotion for this? I don't think it was because it had WWE's involvement because "The Call" is distributed by them and that is doing well in the box office. I only saw a trailer for this movie when I went to see "Parker" and it looked really interesting. I even saw it with a couple of friends who nothing of it until the night we saw it. They ended up liking it as did I. All I can say is that I am glad I saw it when I did. I don't think I remember seeing TV spots for it.
I saw several trailers for this and many tv spots(But I go to the movies every week), but I think it is mainly due to poor word of mouth from critics and a mixed audience not to mention being released at the same time as Oz: The Great and Powerful(Raimi and a blockbuster) it stood no chance at making back its budget, also with Gi Joe 2, The Host, and Olympus Has Fallen coming out the past few weeks also ate at its profit and with several more blockbusters are on the way... I can just say it was released at the wrong time. I will be picking up the dvd, for I may not have liked it that much, but the dvd from what the rumors say the dvd is going to fix some of my problems with it.
I think The Call is doing better, because it was advertised with a popular starlet(Berry) and the advertising for that gives the impression of a very cliched plot that targeted the teen audience more, while Dead Man Down was advertised for a more adult audience.
The last ten movies I really enjoyed didn't do well at the box office. I thought Dead Man Down was intense even though I'm normally not crazy about CF, I liked him in this.
These days it's hard to gauge what is going to hit or miss at the movies. I hated Oz, despite all the fanfare and bells & whistles- so go figure...
I didn't like Oz either. Too bubbly and fairy. It was a strange mix. On One side all the fairy type things was for me too childish, at one point I thought I wrongly chose the movie and was only for kids. On the other hand too "scary" to be only for kids.
Funny your quote about CF. During the movie I was wondering why ppl tend to not like him. dead Man Down was ok, not a great movie but a good one. Had to roll my eyes at the obvious fact that Beatrice is not french as her mum is, especially when the actress is really french.
I used to have super powers, but my therapist took them away
maybe in the theatre it has not busted the block, as they say, but it is so good that it might do well on the internet and word-of-mouth.
i have seen a lot of *beep* action movies in the last few years - this is not a *beep* action movie. it actually has depth to it and you get invested in the characters.
the title doesnt really 'grab' you.. it sounds like another generic action film (like Parker or Kidnapped or whatever) where nothing makes any goddamn sense. . . . . but it's not like that at all.
it's almost like the studio didn't know exactly what to do with it, how to market it, etc.
When a good movie fails to reach it's audience, the reason is bad marketing. This includes movie title, poster design, trailer, TV spots, press events, online marketing.
For this movie it was pretty obvious early on. You can read about it in the old threads.
Not sure about elsewhere in the world, but in the UK there has been practically no promotion at all. I thought it was really good, but I would imagine that your average punter would think it was too downbeat.
