Unnecessarily black and white
Why does it have to be black and white? Is it because of budget constraints? Does the movie being black and white have any meaning??

shareHere is what Whedon had to say about that in an interview for CraveOnline:
Did black and white make things harder or easier?
Black and white made life ten times easier. It was ultimately a creative decision but also practically it saved our lives because we didn’t have to worry about painting things or the color of something clashing with something else. It made everybody look absolutely elegant which I very much wanted, and it’s a noir. It’s not a straight up romantic comedy. It’s a dark drama with ridiculously silly moments in it. I feel that the text is credited for being the classic romantic-comedy because it really is the mother of them all, but at the same time not credited for the cold and incisive intelligence with which it deconstructs the romantic comedies that would even come after. Our whole idea of romance is pulled apart in this movie, and then very lovingly taped back together.

"What's the point of having weak enemies? They just waste your time."
It was filmed at Whedon's house, not a set. I'm sure B&W made it ten times easier.

Why does every film in this age need to be in color? Just because we see real life in color, or because color film is always there? In films like this one that don't emphasize splash, but rather characters' interaction, black and white can draw our attention closer to the latter and sustain a much more appropriate mood. In the Branagh/Thompson/Washington version (1993), there was much more focus on the lush backgrounds and Italian vistas, which benefitted from the use of color. This is a very different version. You can always take your pick.

I actually enjoyed the film quite a bit.. but was a bit disappointed as I was expecting some CG colorization ala Sin City.. and some scenes (like the party scene) I would have loved to have seen that effect, or even an over the top saturated effect full of golds and greens, etc.
But having said that.. The black and white look is fantastic, as is the film. and as a surprise to me, its currently my favorite film of this year. Haven't laughed that hard at a film in quite a while.
