During that last scene in the house, Nate - the friendzoned guy, is holding the camera, and while the light is off, and they are moving about after hearing that the abductor has returned to the house, he clearly says 'here, take the camera'. It is implied that he either went ahead or was arming himself.
And it's seen from the brief flashes during the gunshots that they are in the kitchen, where the guns were. It makes sense that once he realized they were close to the guns, that he should grab one. Unfortunately, he didn't see where the abductor was until he had already shot Samantha.
So, the only real goof, IMHO, was not making those actions more obvious to the viewer. It would have been more interesting to have seen them take the bullets out of the guns, and grab a loaded one, then to rely on dialog during a black screen. Maybe they could have put subtitles during those 'lights out' part, just to make it easier to follow. *shrug*
