Can't Imagine the Nosedive Economy Ever Being Sustainable.
...Despite news that China is trialing something sorta akin to this system I could not see it lasting long. In this episode's case it's a system of goods and services only available to those with positive social media rankings. I think this was would eventually be ripe for manipulation - with too many people downgrading others out of sheer malice and limiting consumer choice that causes purchasing power and businesses to fall.
But then again, we have societies and economies that are able to sustain themselves - at least for the short term - with great inequality and great swathes of the population having poor purchasing power, with wealth concentrated among the elite 1%. This corresponds to the episode's metaphor of social mobility, token respect, and privelage assisting in the accumulation of wealth.
Nevertheless, this mobility is solely enabled by a button push often based on first impressions. Lacey is denied her flight despite having the credits to afford it solely for being flustered, which sets of a denial of other services. Again, this occuring so easily makes me wonder about the system's sustainability.
So any thoughts? Hopefully there are...
