why are elliot and alan broke?

correct me if im wrong, but isn't alan a neurosurgeon?
and i doubt elliot would be strugging to get by financially either.
i mean, i understand san francisco is pricey, but if a neurosurgeon in a double income household cant get by isn't basically everyone doomed?!
couldn't get my head around this the whole ep...

I was just coming on here to post the same thing. I remember him being a neurosurgeon as well. Very confused by the episode! ?.

I just looked the character up on wiki and it list his occupation as Neurosurgeon so not sure why he needs another off the wall occupation...

He's not a real neurosurgeon. Alan said that to get Elliot's mom to like him. If Alan was a neurosurgeon, they would never be short on cash. A neurosurgeon's starting salary is 400K a year. That amount goes up drastically after practicing for a couple years.

I don't know, there were several episodes when he said he was a doctor, including the first episode when Elliot re-connects with him.
