just wanna see how many agree, not get into a fight
shareDon't agree - I've seen worse, but I definitely don't agree with those who say it's a great film. For me, it certainly is not. I know I won't watch it again. The acting of Denis Lavant is definitely amazing, too bad the actor is way more talented than the director.
shareFunny how Lavant and Carax have worked several times before. Great film.
shareI disagree with the OP. I was charmed and mesmerized by this oddity. I think it all depends on how one views it and what one believes Oscar is.
Once it started ... I was sucked in. I wasn't ready for it to end.
The film is obviously metaphorical, and nothing (or almost nothing) is supposed to be taken literally, plus there are many references to other films and in general it's an ode to cinema (or the cinema that is dying out because of the digital age). That much is clear. And yet it is not a great film, nor it is exceptionally odd or unique (others might disagree, but I think this depends on one's knowledge of films). So many people are talking about it that my expectations were very high, and as it often happens in such cases, I was disappointed.
shareCan you detail your disappointment?
shareAre you suggesting that the production value alone dictates rather or not a film is good, outside of the idea itself? I happen to think the opposite. The idea behind the film is most important, production value is just icing on the cake.
But, I think I'm wrong in my assessment of your opinion.
I found the film to be amazing, yet I am a fan of Leos Carax. To put succinctly, this isn't the type of film for everyone, nor is it trying to be. This film, and this type of film, is akin to modern art, in that it can be quite esoteric. I saw this while living in France and again in the US, and it gets better each time. If you like modern art, Damien Hirst, Rob Pruitt, type of artwork, then chances are this will be right up that pathway.
I won't fault anyone for disliking it as it is not the blockbuster type designed for grandiose appeal. To the OP, calling it the worst film ever has to be a bit of hyperbole, no? You're ranking that movie about a spray that gets rid of dog poop ahead of Holy Motors?
