It's funny that you wrote "if you can't make something intriguing to watch, what's the point of making a film?", wyntrz, because:
Number one: I personally found the film to be primarily INTRIGUING.
Number two: Because it didn't "intrigue" you, doesn't mean Leos Carax didn't have a point to make - or that he or anyone else shouldn't have made a film at all.
Number three: Not every film's raison d'etre is to "intrigue" you. I don't think that was the point of a TRANSFORMERS or a Jennifer Aniston movie, don't you?
Number four: The fact that you can have such a "point of view" about your viewing experience & I have mine & we are communicating it and it has made (at least) me ruminate about it & write this (feel free to disagree) is THE justification we need for films like this to be made. Or to get really "deep", this is one of the purposes of ART. Dialogue.
Number five: They say about art that it's a mirror. The mirror is on you. You "get" the movie in your own personal way. You ultimately get what you bring in.
Number Six: French director Catherine Breillat saw a newspaper headline asking about one of her films: Is It Pornography or Is It Art?
She replied: "If you have to ask that question, then it's Art".
Number seven: "I'm not mad at you. I'm mad at the dirt". - Faye Dunaway as Joan Crawford in MOMMIE DEAREST.
Have a nice day.
