STREAMING ON NETFLIX WITHOUT THE pipe

Ceci n'est pas une pipe...

The good news? HOLY MOTORS is streaming on Netflix.

The bad news? This version has artificially blurred Denis Lavant's erect penis in the Eva Mendes section. I thought he had an apricot puff between his legs.

I haven't groaned as loudly since body parts were obscured in the famous orgy scene in Stanley Kubrick's EYES WIDE SHUT (and that was in a theater).

You can show a raunchy castration in a mainstream film like HOSTEL 2 but americans can't be shown a beautiful, natural, functioning member within the context of an art movie - in their own homes?

Merde! There is something wrong with THIS movie!

The penis (AFAIK) wasn't even real. They even showed that mile-long dong in Boogie Nights, which was also fake, but I guess since it was flaccid, then the whole world will be alright having seen it.

It's even more hypocritical, since there are a handful of films on Netflix that depict actual sex. No tricky camera angles in at least one of them. Though, I can't recall the title...

I'm torn on this question. Generally I want to see things exactly as the artist intended, so that I may come to my own conclusions. There is always some nanny or killjoy lurking, looking for an opportunity to control what information others may be exposed to. And the censors always act with the best of intentions, self-assured in the righteousness of their campaign. It comes from all angles; for example, "The Last Temptation of Christ" was pretty much shut down by religious protests, but a screening of "Napoleon Dynamite" was cancelled because someone was concerned about the phrase that Napoleon utters in one scene, "You guys are retarded."

On the other hand, there are some cases -- and this is one of them -- where I'd be more comfortable if the artist had been a bit less committed, if you know what I mean. Certain displays can be a bit overwhelming, and this detracts from my ability to absorb the totality of what is being conveyed. So I'm not going to argue that this needs to be censored for the good of society, but I have to admit that I sort of appreciate it here.

To be clear, I certainly advocate censorship with respect to things children are exposed to. Although in our modern era, even this basic concept has become muddled and problematic. We've got school districts that expel children for pointing a finger and saying "Bang!", and there are serious movements to ban or rewrite "Tom Sawyer". So it seems to me we've got a lot of lunatics running around that consider themselves enlightened, and I don't know what to do about that except maybe hit them with baseball bats.

You seem incredibly intelligent and well informed, so it would be completely unfair to discredit your argument, though I would have to say that I vehemently disagree on many of your points.

I noticed this too and came here to post. Dumb decision. Especially after watching Antichrist on Netflix streaming a few weeks ago. Weird double-standard.

I watched it for the first time about a month ago and it's not blurred anymore. It's so obviously fake anyway. Even if it was real it would be ridiculous to blur it out. It's just a penis, ffs. It's completely mind boggling that people can be so puritanical when it comes to nudity and sexuality yet not bat an eye at the most extreme sadistic violence (I don't recall any blurring in The Human Centipede II (Full Sequence), for example).
