In the comics that came after the show(spoilers)

so Grace develops a computer virus that can destroy the nanites if uploaded she dies but before she dies she gives the virus to Rachel

Rachel was working on one of the pendents which according to her acts like a bug sprey for the nanites

its been 4 years since the events of the show and Rachel hasn't talked to her daughter or miles or Monroe

Rachel tracks down miles and asks miles and Monroe to help her defeat the nanines but they refuse until charlie says she is going so they agree

they fight there way to the nanites home town where everyone is connected to the nanites in a social hive kind of like the Matrix

everyone is with out independent emotions and everyone easily forgives

tom nevil is there and so is connor

Aaron and his wife are with them as well

they try to upload the virus using a laptop but Aaron and his wife get shot and killed

Tom tries to convince them to go to there side

so monroe shoots him in the head

all hope appears lost in that they are surrounded by a bunch of nanite zombie people

so rachel tells Charlie she loves her and then tells miles she loves him and to "TAKE CARE OF OUR DAUGHTER"

confirming that miles is charlie's father

she throws the pendant on the ground and says she is willing and walks out and lets the nanites in

now in her head charlie and danny are little and ben is there she says that its not real they are not her children and ben is not her husband they are the nanites

the ninites say

why are you resisting us you let us in

and rachel says Nope you let me in

and then says you called me the genius in the family you are right
i memorized the virus that will kill you
and says the connection the nanites give to humans goes both ways and she begins accessing the nanites neural net and begins to upload the virus directly from her brain

the nanites and everyone connected to the nanites drop dead including rachel

connor included

it ends with
Charlie miles and monroe riding off into the wild

with charlie and miles never seeing monroe again
(monroe was changed by his sons death and charlie says last she heard was he went to south america looking for a new war to fight and that she hopes he never finds it)

it ends with charlie saying that the power never comes back on and that maybe one day it will

the entire story is her narration to her little brother(miles son with some women he met after rachel died)

now

i have a single comment about the comics

charlie says no one knows why the power didn't come back on

its obvious the nanites did not simply upkeep the power plants and what not they absorbed electricity and when the pendants were turned on it manipulated them to release energy

with the nanites dead there is nothing to turn any power on so its obvious in order for them to get power they have to rebuild power stations

get them working etc etc

reply

I don't think so. First, we saw power come on in the show after years of no upkeep. An iPhone powered on 15 years after it last worked.

The main issue is that I believe Charlie meant power still didn't work no matter what. Even if you made a new generator or battery it still did nothing

The deal with the power at the end was resolved in that last image of the comic. Note the typically suspicious revolution styled lightning bug in the bottom right corner. I'm going off of memory here but I did finally sit down last night and read through all 4 of the comics back to back. Still I'm near positive it's the last image in the story for the comic and bottom right corner.

I think what they are trying to say is the Nano isn't dead. Only the nano that had formed a conscience and that was trying to course correct humanity. That nano was all linked together so only it was affected by the virus.

Remember too that there was a big fear during the season that killing all of the nano would possibly set the entire planet on fire. Additionally, the Nano in the series were all through out the earth and in peoples bodies. So given those that weren't under control of the conscience didn't die, it seems to support the idea that they didn't die because the nano inside of them and all over the world didn't die.

So they leave the door open that this world went on without power but also without the nano-hive-mind to deal with. Additionally it went on without anyone with the knowledge of how to do anything about the nano as technology and the people with the knowledge would continue to disappear.

But I do agree about the power plants and stuff. That was one of the many science flaws in the series. Just because the interference with power usage was gone during pendant use and so on, stuff just shouldn't have magically come to life. The batteries in the starter for the helicopter should have been dead. Lights shouldn't have magically come on and computers shouldn't have been able to magically connect over long distances let alone pull power through the dead power lines. But still, I don't think the lack of upkeep (and certainly at the end the lack of people with the knowledge to know how to run a power plant) kept the power off. It was the nano, and that little last bug in the comic was to express that.

The nanites were supposedly like little capacitors - they didn't simply interfere with electricity per se, they absorbed it, using it to reproduce and (when persuaded by the pendants) release it for use by machines. Remember, they were initially intended for wireless "transmission" of electricity, but they had a strange side-effect at that stage of development that got exploited and weaponized by the government.
