Rachel

So...just finished S1. Can someone explain how Rachel did anything wrong??

She (and Ben) created a software which was then used by as a weapon by the DoD, against her will. She protects her family (ex. by shooting that man who would've taken all of their food and left her children starving). She leaves her family, whom she loves more than anything, in order to protect them so that the militia doesn't go after them. As a result, she's held captive for years, and doesn't reveal anything that could give them any more leverage. She then goes on a quest to turn the power back on to level the playing field...etc etc etc...

Don't really understand how any of these things makes her a villain, and why Charlie is so angry with her?? To me she actually seems to be the most noble character in the series!

I think it's as much to do with Charlie being a rebellious teenage girl as anything ejse. A lot of the show is about her growing up, turning from a child to a woman (although with a lot of fighting and killing people!)
(if you remember she was also annoyed with her dads new gf, just because!)
She can't accept she's actually very like her mum.
Rachel is v headstrong and doesn't really listen to what anyone ejse wants, including her daughter. She does things for the overall 'good' but she is really a mixed character.
Charlie is actually very moral- Charlie thinks about her family first (such as Nora).
Rachel thinks wider, she thinks about humankind.
In Charlie's eyes Rachel caused Nora's death as well and abandoned Charlie as a child.
To Rachel, she had to do these things. Not always very 'motherly' I guess!

She'd been told and lived with the pain that her mother was dead for years. Any teenager upon finding out that was a lie and her mother was still alive would be furious. It's a normal reaction.
