Entertaining.

I read it being called a Fantasy Musical, which hits the nail right on the head!
I enjoyed it a lot and would watch it again.
As a film, without knowing anything about the characters or the times it should be entertaining, if you like musicals. Knowing the music and something about the characters, if events are all true, it is a look into a very sad and troubled life. I didn’t watch it with a fine toothed comb and took it for what it was....entertainment. For a few hours I could tap out and sing along to the choreographed musical numbers in relative secrecy, feel sorry for the boy and man of the Elton John character through all their hardships, boo and hiss at his convincing lover (boos and hisses), cringe at the protagonist’s forays into heterosexual partnerships, marvel at the ridiculous fashions and costumes worn and sigh with relief when it was all over and he, hopefully, has healed and is happy.
