Great film but could have been a lot better

I did think they did a lot of things right and gave the first film more depth.

What the first film did better though was characters and character construction.

I think there should have been more about the people involved, like the base jumpers and the spiritual connection. A lot more about what happens afterwards. I also felt they rushed too quickly into the deaths and just killed people off towards one final character.

I felt the end was a little disappointing. "Choose your own path", seemed a flimsy reasoning when there were all these stories about geo-politics and green issues thrown in. Finding out more about that would have been good.

So the point is, they touched on some issues but just left them there. They talk about them and then just leave it and we're left with these super heroes, just because who really don't do anything.

Still I liked they raised these issues but I wished they have delved into them more.

I think they had a lot of good ideas, but implemented them very poorly.

The first movie kept it simple: surfer guys robbing banks to fund their nonstop summer vacation. The remake turned them into extreme athletes/fight club badasses/party boys with a rich sponsor/eco terrorists/nature hippies. They didnt control the scope of what they wanted to do and ended up with a mess of ideas crammed together.

I would go as far as saying, they kind of insulted their market. I think if they delved into the plots and sub-plots a little or a lot more, it would have made the film feel a lot more better. They just touched them and thought "that's enough" and you're left thinking, "come on, it wouldn't harm you if you went further".

The characters could have had more depth too. I liked Samsara, Bodhi too and Utah but they just told us, this and that happened to them so deal with it.

So much was going here but they just wanted it to be stunts and fights over and over. Fine but what a lost opportunity. The excitement and action would have been so much more better if they film had digressions to story development and adding substance to the film.

Maybe there is a directors cut :/. I think there was one for Point Break.

The film had a lot of potential. It could have been pretty good if they had focused on certain things more and ignored some of the others. The first preview got me pretty excited about the Ozaki Eight and made me wonder what cool stuff was going to happen with it. Unfortunately, nothing cool happened and it was a mess.

As far as the characters go, I think its best to view them as a bunch of dumbasses who think they are deep and intellectual, but arent. The movie makes a lot more sense if you see them as a bunch of idiots pretending to be eco-warriors rather than actual eco-warriors.

Then again the film could have been a lot better if they had more substance and I think viewers would have liked that a lot more.

Such a shame. So much potential.
