5.3 is too high

Just taking this movie on it's own merits and forgetting that it's a remake, it's still disappointing, perhaps a 5.3. The fact that it's a remake and updates the original in bizarre and perplexing ways is just a kick in the nuts to the fans and lowers the score further for me.

None of these characters are likeable. They're all douchey and no one looks like they're having fun. They ruined Utah, Pappas and Bodhi. Luke Bracey is no Keanu and Edgar Ramirez is no Swayze.

They took a simple plot and made it so, so dumb. How is a motocross driver able to do all these impossible stunts? He failed at surfing, yet he's gonna wingsuit like a pro? This new guy hasn't been around for most of the Osaki 8, but yeah, let's let him join, even though we know he's FBI. Bodhi is in a fight club? Cool, let's show that once to show us how tough he is and never mention it again. Let's not take any time to develop the relationship between Utah and Teresa Palmer so that we care when it turns out she's part of the gang, we need more time for STUNTS!!! And don't get me started on all the people Johnny Utah ends up getting killed because he's an idiot.

The original was silly, sure, but it didn't take itself too seriously. It was a fun action flick with memorable characters that you cared about. The only thing redeeming about this remake was the stunts, but even then, the action in the original was more memorable. Give me the raid on the house, the chase scene (Bodhi throws a freaking dog at Keanu!) and the jumping out of the plane with no parachute any day over this.
