It seems as though the filmmakers are using this as a starring vehicle for J.Jones, if his character is indeed the one the funeral is about in the trailer, logically we can expect he returns as a ghost in the house they were living in. This will probably be the start of his Hollywood comeback like Travolta and Pulp Fiction.
Jones isn't in this.
shareIt is strange that the trailer seems to suggest otherwise and neither Depp nor Jones are featured in it. It is possible that Depp is playing a younger version of Jones, could be flashbacks to his birdwatching hobby while Winona was a kid.
They are killing him off in the trailer but it's a fake, since the stars of the original film were killed off in the first 10 minutes of that movie and came back as ghosts.
Why would Depp be in it?

He probably won't be in it and it makes sense because Keaton is the character that typically Burton would hire Depp to play. They wouldn't have him for a cameo because he wasn't in the original.
