The closet (big spoiler)

I enjoyed this, went home quite happy in the belief I understood what was going on and then made the mistake of reading this forum, so now here's my questions.

At the time the sisters were getting locked in the closet when they misbehaved:
a) was the uncle hidden under the house at the time?
b) was there access from the hidden room to the closet (I seem to remember there was) and if so
c) was being abused by the uncle the awful thing that happened to them in the closet?

reply

a) Yes.
b) Yes.
c) Unlikely.

The sisters' issues were with their mother only. I'm guessing she punished them so often that they chose to 'run away' (ignoring problems), instead of confronting their mother about her regime. This became a pattern in their adult lives.

Those are based on a phone conversation between the sisters at the start and also, Annie's comments to her cousin Liz and later, to the detective.

Obviously Annie was never aware of Charles' existence before the end of the movie. If he had raped her and Nicole when they were girls I suppose they would have known their mother had a brother.

I thought a partial reason for the mother to lock the sisters up was to protect them from Judas. But it doesn't make much sense since there is a trap door connecting to the hidden room. Maybe to keep them from seeing Judas.

reply

Repressed memories. Also there are a couple of scenes where Annie has vague flashbacks of her uncle.

I thought the eye looking through the hole at the end was Annie dreaming about EXACTLY what happened in the closet - that a creepy eye would watch them through a hole.

Pretty freaky for an adult (terrifying for a kid) and more believable that it wouldn't necessarily give up the knowledge that someone was secretly living there. (i.e. maybe it was their mom, or someone in kahoots with their mom to look at them just to freak them out. A kid might not think to resolve that mystery too much. It would just be a scarey thing.) Maybe...?
