Im starting to thin IMDB ratings are full of *beep*

I havnt watched this movie yet, but im a MASSIVE horror nerd, ive been watching horror movies since the age of 7, I just love them.

Over the past 2 years, ive only been watching horror movies on imdb that have a decent rating by that I mean anything above 6.5% (considering how harsh people rate)

If I watch this movie and find it to be good, whilst it has a 5 rating on here then Ill know never to trust imdb reviews/ threads again lol

How can soo many horror movies that have come out over the years be rated so low, the trailer of this movie makes it seem like a mix between blair witch project and drag me to hell (without the comedy) im looking forward to watching it.

Don't trust IMDb ratings. People here seem to love the usual cliched haunted house films like Woman in Black and can't appreciate subtlety like The Innkeepers. The Pact is good, by the way. There's a reason it's fresh on RottenTomatoes.

Reviews by professional reviewers are often terrible, so it can't be entirely surprising, that IMDB, with reviews written by random people, are even worse.
It seems people expect a horror movie HAS to have moments that make you jump, when in fact those moments are more often brought on by a sudden jump in music or sound than by actual fear. Horror is meant to horrify, it's a pity more people don't understand this.

That said, I've found the majority of recent popular horror films to be disappointing. Paranormal Activity was to me not a particularly good film, neither was Insidious, but I see numerous people calling these films The Best. I've been watching horror for almost 30 years. The pact produces a feeling of discomfort throughout, and fits horror more than films that have little jumpy "scary" moments.

There are two types of "horror" movies. The scary kind, and the horrifying kind. Some people like one, some people like the other. To me horror is pointless if it's not scary because basically nothing horrifies me. I just kind of yawn and shrug when people are dismembered or horribly tortured or whatever in the "horrifying" horror movies.

So it's sort of a matter of opinion.

That said, I quite liked this... Thought it was a "scary/suspenseful" type, wasn't really anything horrifying in it.

Plus the plot was interesting, the mystery aspect was cool, and it didn't spoonfeed you all the answers. They're all there in the details, but they expect you to actually use your brain to connect the dots.

Too many Hollywood movies are just way too heavy handed with exposition and making sure to explicitly explain every last thing, often multiple times, which is just insulting.

There's nothing horrifying OR scary about gore, it's merely funny. A concept can horrify by shaking your belief in humanity to the core, or simply by being so detached from our understanding of morality that we have no frame of reference to it in reality. Something which horrifies should then lead to a fear, jumpy points in a film are not scary, a sudden chord being struck doesn't change the onscreen presentation.

This is a very good horror movie. Believe me there are tons of awesome horror movies on imdb with 5 ratings. Don't trust them at all.

IMDB tends to under-rate horror movies. Take it from a person who has rated over 500 of them, these users do.

If a horror movie has a 5.0 or higher on IMDB, it's probably worth a watch.

Yeah, and if it has over 7.0 then it's probably not worth watching, lol.

So many factors influence IMDB rating nowadays. I have to consider so much when looking at the scores. like Taken 2 Which got absolutely massacered by critics which was actually shocking as a 12a sequel to the 18 cert original but on here....score of 7.2 ?? 12 year olds must of loved it. the Metascore feature I find a brilliant way to reinforce the reviews, lots of professional critics and an average score made along with the user scores.

Horror films have about 1.0 rating lower on average than other films here on IMDB
Also they are really subjective, what one person finds scary or tense, another finds lame and boring. Horror films 5.0+ are surely worth watching, if they interest you (plot, setting, subgenre, director, actors,...) I even found some rated 4.0-4.9 that I really liked.
Tip: Don't watch trailers or detailed plot descriptions, they often give too much away. (or already show the scariest or goriest scenes)

Beware of fake reviews and ratings though, newer (2005-...) low budget films often have 9-10 points rave reviews and votes by crew members. (really obvious if the reviewer only has written 1 review...)
