So what was so terrible about the closet?? (minor spoilers?)

Halfway through the film when Stevie goes into the house she goes towards the closet and begins to say "oh god it was so terrible, I see what happened to you as a child!" What happened to her as a child? The fact that when they were locked in the closet they could possibly hear Judas breathing or moving around in the room behind the closet?

They should have made that clear in the movie. I believe both sisters were physically/sexually abused in the closet.

I think you are exactly right.

Did you ever think the movie didn't say exactly what happened on purpose?

Look at the responses from the other posters. Each one is different. One says it was physical abuse, sexual abuse, being tied in the dark, having to hear some stranger next to the wall, etc. etc.

Whatever you think it is is probably the most horrible thing you can imagine. That's the point. That's the fear. Imagine what a bad parent would do to a child in a dark closet that upsets everyone? You don't need it said. Just think it and that's what was done. And whatever you are thinking is more horrible than anything anyone could ever say.

Well, we know there was a passage between the closet and the hidden room. So it's not a leap to assume that the girls being locked in the closet was an invitation by the mother for her brother to "come out and play".

Being locked in the dark in a closet as a kid is bad enough. Imagine if there was a serial killer in there with you.

considering they had absolutely zero knowledge of Judas/Charles and he killed Nicole, Liz and the cop guy without a blink of an eye I doubt that he just came out to help discipline his nieces in a closet.
More likely they were locked in there when they misbehaved, maybe beaten but my theory is that they were tied up maybe even with their hair lashed to the pipe or whatever that was for hours, or maybe even overnight as punishment for whatever their mother thought they did wrong.
