No, no, and NO!

I love Wuxia genre (in both movies and literature), but this looks like tasteless, unauthentic trash that has no layers of profoundness or complexity. It's never a good idea to Americanize genre that's completely antithetical to Hollywood's style of filmmaking. I guess I'll stick with traditional Wuxia films.

This was made by Zhang Yimou. Did you see his previous films in this style?

"I'm not arguing that with you. I know he can get the job, but can he do the job?"

Yes, I did. Which is one of the reasons why I'm not excited for this movie, since it feels very inauthentic, sloppy, and Americanized for a director who made great movies like Hero.

How can you judge that based on a trailer?

The same way how people judge other movies that don't look very appealing based on their trailers. Besides, I said, "it looks like trasg". I didn't say, "it will be trash".

Hero was an apologist film authorized by the PRC for it containing sufficient latent messaging.

This is the same.

reply

Clearly not the same thing, since Hero seemed way more authentic to its genre, it wasn't trying to be a generic fantasy movie with monsters, and it wasn't pandering to American/wider audience. As for the "PRC" -- well, all Chinese films have to be authorized by Chinese government. But considering how many terrible films PRC approves, it's a surprise that we get films like this.

Who was the wall built to keep out? Evil non-Han Chinese monsters.

Who is corrupt and sneaky? White people.

Who has a great history, and amazing technology? Chinese people.

Who is dirty, unwashed, and ragtag? White people.

Who is super clean and shiny? Chinese people.

Racist!
